Historical Evidence of America's Past

The historical record establishes the United States is recognized as a Christian nation. Our founding constitutional document, the Declaration of Independence, conceived in prayer and Bible study, declared that man was created equal by God to live in freedom with certain unalienable rights governed by God's moral laws, defined in the Declaration as "Laws of nature and nature's God." The founders unanimously agreed that represented the only reliable basis for the continued existence of the United States as a stable society under a moral system of justice.
"Moral law" cannot be the product of the political or judicial process. If that is attempted then all is relative. There is no right or wrong; indeed as a matter of fact, there is no "moral" law. Roger Sherman, signer of all four founding documents, believed: "God commands all men everywhere to repent and he also commands them to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ."President Jackson held: "The Bible is the rock on which our Republic rests."

Commending the founders and the Declaration of Independence, President Lincoln declared: "… (T)hey erected a beacon to guide their children, and their children's children, (T)hey established these great self-evident truths that … their posterity might look up again to the Declaration of Independence and take courage to renew that battle which their fathers began, so that truth and justice and mercy and all the humane and Christian virtues might not be extinguished from the land."

President Reagan affirmed that the United States came into existence resulting from a "Divine plan" and "Without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation going under."

Newsweek, Dec. 27, 1982, page 44, observed that the founders quoted the Bible more frequently than any other source. "Historians are discovering that the Bible, perhaps even more than the Constitution, is our founding document."

The divergent current administration: George Mason, father of the Bill of Rights, asserted: "As nations cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world, so they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes and effects, Providence punishes national sins by national calamities."Isaiah 59:13 "(There is) rebellion and treachery against the Lord, turning our backs on our God, fomenting oppression and revolt, uttering lies our hearts have conceived, justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter, truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey."

America's future is shrouded in nuclear storm clouds and stalked by godless terrorists. God is banished by the current administration from our government and specifically from our schools where we train and teach our young people to think. That destroys our heritage and culture. President Obama tells the Muslim world we are not a Christian nation. He avows to change the Constitution and discard the Declaration of Independence. He writes in his book, that the Constitution contains a "tyrannical consistency that might lock future generations into a single, unalterable course …"

We are at war with radical Islamic terrorists. Our economy is in a free fall. Viciousness sweeps this nation as well as disease, illness, and natural disaster. Our schoolchildren live in danger and an environment of drugs and sex. Families are breaking up. The God-ordained institution of marriage is under attack. A "health care bill," debated behind closed doors, is not only unconstitutional but tyrannical. Congress lacks authority to mandate insurance coverage for individuals or private businesses or to require government to pay for the godless practice of abortions.

The al-Qaida attacks in Fort Hood killing 13 American soldiers, and the al-Qaida attack made again on Christmas Day as Northwest Airlines Flight 253 prepared to land in Detroit, demonstrate our security is in jeopardy. It's time now. We must look to God, not man, for direction and protection. Christ's birth divided the calendar into B.C. and A.D. This will continue until the end of time, a monument to the birth of Jesus Christ. Each of us is looking at eternity. Christ offers man a new birth and a new start. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold all things are become new." II Corinthians 5:17

Government needs to be required to reclaim its heritage of faith in God as set forth in the Declaration of Indepedance.. The Rockford City Council, along with the politicians running for office, should be admonished that a resolution be adopted proclaiming the Declaration of Independence as the city's foundational rule of law. Perhaps this could ignite a flame burning across this nation. Let's join together to cry out to God.Bernard Reese of the law firm Reese & Reese is a trustee of the Supreme Court Historical Society.
