Are you aware that this Sunday is Grandparents Day?

National Grandparents Day falls each year on the first Sunday following Labor Day.  It was initiated by a West Virginian named Marian Lucille Herndon McQuaid with help from her husband Joseph McQuaid.

After being married over 60 years, the McQuaid’s had 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

There were 3 purposes established for this day: (1) To honor grandparents.  (2) To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children.  (3) Help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance that older people can offer.

Through Mrs. McQuaid’s hard work, in 1979 President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day each year to be National Grandparents Day with September being the chosen month to signify the autumn years of life.

The concept of passing faith in God on to the next generation is an area where grandparents can be of great influence.  Jim looked at that aspect as well as he mentioned Joshua 24:15, Judges 2:10 and 2 Timothy 1:5.

So whether they are elderly or not, this program was designed to show honor and respect to grandparents and to do that from a biblical perspective.  So when you review this edition of Crosstalk, you’ll get an opportunity to hear from listeners just like you as they answered the following questions:

–If you’re a grandparent, what are you doing to pass your faith on to your grandchildren?

–If you’re not a grandparent, what lessons have you learned from yours?
