Once again, I was able to connect with the warm and talented actress, Candace Cameron Bure. She was at her home in Florida, doing laundry and caring for her little ones who were home with chicken pox. We chatted on the phone for a while, and like any other mom she took a moment here and there, to pause for the concern of her children, as did I.
I wouldn't normally stop an interview in order to suggest that my little guy stop jumping on the bed, and turn on Treehouse for a while, but Candace's warmth and down to earth freshness tells me that it's ok to be myself--Canadian accent and all. :)
Candace and her husband Valeri Bure recently saw a long-time dream realized when together with friends, Tim (executive chef) and Lara Boyd, they opened the Milk and Honey Café. I was anxious to find out more about the café, so I asked Candace to share a little background on their journey...
Candace explained that their friendship started a few years back when she and Valeri met Tim, in a restaurant they were dining at. Being a hockey fan, Tim approached Val, but soon discovered that it was more than just hockey that drew him to this couple-it was their faith. He described it as a light shining around them, and wanted to know what it was. Candace explained to him that it was the light of Christ living in and through them, and encouraged him to learn more.
Although reluctant at first, Tim and his wife Lara started attending the same church as the Bures and have been for a couple of years. While the friendship was growing, so was their relationship with Jesus Christ. In early 2007 Tim and Lara accepted Christ as their personal savior and were baptized soon after.
Candace says that as long as she's known Val, it's been a dream of his to open a restaurant, and that Val suggested forming a partnership with Tim, should he ever open one. While the connection of the two families opened a door to salvation it also opened another to the Milk and Honey Café, which opened in early May 2007.
Candace chose the name "Milk and Honey Café" from the Old Testament--their business cards marked with the verse, "So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey..."~ Exodus 3:8
She also put her hand to decorating the café along with husband, Valeri. After completely gutting the space in their building at 1755 North University Drive in Pembroke Pines, Florida, they gave it a European chic feel, with clean simple lines, espresso colored woods, and cream colored walls. Family photos in black and white, and a little hockey memorabilia, give the café its personal touch, adding to the warm feel of the place.
While Candace and Val are more involved in the business end of operations they have spent much of the first few weeks greeting customers and lending a presence to the place.
If you're planning a trip to the greater Fort Lauderdale area, stop in and enjoy the fresh European cuisine at the Milk and Honey Café, I know I will!
Valeri and Candace Bure, with their three children, Natasha, Lev and Maksim. Tim and Lara Boy with their three children, Tabitha, Lily and Harrison. And friend, David Wagie (next to Val and Candace) who Candace says, helped tremendously in the construction of the restaurant.
