Christians must tackle history!

Everytime an atheist or emergent such as Brian McLaren is told the Bible is the truth, they point back at the supposed failures of the Church in history: slavery, apartheid, the inquisitions, etc. . . and Christians are left speechless and defenseless. But there are ways to defend the gospel against these accusations! When will the Church stop receiving these false accusations? For example, responding to the post above-- Martin Luther held to the absolute truth of the Word (read his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail) rather than the "absolute truth of his day." He didn't compromise.
I think it's interesting that the emergent church is turning to so much worldly wisdom (such as the philosophy of Jurgen Moltmen, evolutionary biology, or quantum physics) and yet the post above makes it sound as if the emergent church is merely questioning man-made tradition. I believe the emergent church is so dangerous precisely because they are opposed to Biblical truth and in favor of man-made tradition (such as liturgical, mystical, and ritualistic religion) and worldly wisdom derived from philosophy or science that isn't tethered to the truth of God's Word. (Colossians 2:8) By leaving the Scriptures they are actually becoming part of the compromising Church that they criticize as historical failures.

This has been very beneficial and applicable to me since I have a "Christian" friend who has slid into this new philosophy of thinking and I do need to educate myself and not sit back...Thank You!

I have no doubt that Jason Carlson is more versed in the ways of the emergent movement than I am. This video doesn't present his entire message, so I can only comment on the portion I saw.
The books I've been reading by members of this emergent movement have been a breath of fresh air. I haven't seen the proclamation that "all" truth is relative, but rather truth derived from traditional ideation and man-made doctrine is relative. (What if Martin Luther had held to the absolute "truths" of his day?) There is certainly room for discovery on the continuum of reformation, rather than holding to tradition--which our Saviour so solemnly warned against. Our tiny finite minds haven't figured out the entirety of an Infinite God---who may not always fit into the rigid doctrines we've established. (He's probably a tad bit more transcendent than that!)
I have never been to a church that describes itself as emergent or emerging, so I can't claim absolute expertise, but their words resonate a response to some traditionalists that are burdensome rather than freeing.
