Burn baby burn!

Let's just use coal! It's traditional - that's reason enough for most hicks. Of course, the more coal we use, the more money we throw to thugs in the UMW mafia. Meanwhile, burn your trash, burn your leaves, burn your food waste, the more the better. It's the American way!

fluorescent bulbs and $$

My husband spent part of last year converting our house to all CF bulbs in the name of saving money. I, personally, don't like fluorescent light and complained about it, but have been living with it anyway. Now the new things are LEDs. After spending all that money on CFs he wants to start converting to LEDs - to save even more money on the electric. The interesting thing is... after a year on CFs - our electric bill hasn't changed. So where is that great savings?

Splitting hairs (but better than splitting atoms)

Where was the outcry for the past several decades over the use of fluorescent lights in offices and industrial shops? People have used fluorescent lights in their homes (especially kitchens and bathrooms) for many, many years. The technology of putting the transformer in the bulb itself has made it convenient to use these bulbs in standard light sockets, and they last three or four times longer than a regular incandescent. Incandescent bulbs should not be outlawed, but neither should fluorescent bulbs. Let the buyer beware, and let demand dictate supply. Wind and solar energy sources are viable alternatives where small scale (110 volt) electricity is required. (Not so where 220 volts or more is required for heavier power use, such as ovens, electric water heaters, and certain power tools and industrial equipment. However, it is not the place of government to dictate or manipulate its use. It should be noted that start up costs for wind or solar take an average of 15 to 20 years to pay for themselves at the average prices charged by electric power companies. It is wrong to make all "green" ideas seem bad. George Cancilla
