Re: Emerging Mysticism in New Evangelicalism (Part Two)

Let's be clear: Tozer was a mystic, dyed in the wool. Yes, he was a fundamentalist Christian, but he was also very much a mystic. Both the authors of the article and the response that defended Tozer claim an intimate knowledge of his writings. If that is so, you are familiar w/the names to which he pays great homage: Julian of Norwich, Evelyn Underhill, John of the Cross, etc. - all masters of "centering prayer", all unbridled mystics, and many of them openly sympathetic to other religions in their writings. Mystics can be found in every faith and wisdom tradition in the history of humanity - Buddha, Plato, Tozer, John of the Cross, Rumi - their language is very similar, and the fact that Tozer emerged within a conservative, evangelical framework doesn't lessen the fact. He was very much a student of those whose theology would never pass the test of this site or other "discernment" ministries. Lastly, you are all well read concerning Tozer's books, but what do you know of the man? What of the father Tozer? The pastor? The husband? I have had the privilege of knowing those who worked w/him and his family members intimately. His daughter was a staff member at the church which I now attend. I will not pass gossip, but suffice it to say the following: 1) By their fruits you shall know them 2) If a man can't love his family, why should I believe he was filled with the love of God?

i have not studied this book in super detail, so I can't speak in total agreement or disagreement, but I am concerned when you start trying to bring A.W. Tozer's name into this. I know you said he didn't do the same thing, but you came dangerously close to associating his name with this movement. I totally disagree with this, as I am very familiar with his books and sermons. He does not ever go down this path. I would appreciate if you are going to bring someone in to help you dispute that you be very careful not to drag them down with you, especially someone who is not here to defend himself. I feel very certain that Tozer would support this ministry, so be careful as you defend the faith, that you do it in love- I Peter 3:15.
