I want to thank you, Dave, for your courageous commentary. Rampant rapture speculation is making the church impotent, with too many of my fellow Christians choosing to sit on their "left behinds."

A thought provoking article; not surprising are the responses thus far, though it saddens me when I read comments indicating such a shallow understanding of what was 'common sense' 200 years ago. Apprarently, we have simply lost touch with what the average citizen recognized in the relationship between a tax and the authority garnered by such laws. Two hundred years of post-reformation writing and thinking by thousands of minds that would dwarf most of ours today, yielded a huge body of thought concerning the place of church and state, tested countless times through difficult reforms and not without bloodshed. I have found it quite enlightening to read the works of men and women who lived 200-300 years ago. I am astounded at how we have trivialized away our liberties and freedoms that these people labored and bled for. They were not ignorant, narrow-minded people following a bunch of radicals. They were amazingly well-informed about philosophies and history compared to us in the 20th and 21st centuries. I encourage people to spend some time digging through the writings of these men and women. With so much 'good' material on the bookshelves today, most of it is chaff compared to the thoughts of leading writers prior to and during the founding of our nation.

A typically hypocrital stance when you don't know the truth about science. Dave wants to supplant good science with the cultish interpretation of the "literal" Bible. That interpretation is no more "literal" than anyone elses. But if you keep repeating the same lie over and over, people believe it. Right Dave? Read the Dover decision, learn some real science and stop trying to put nonsense into science class.

I think you have several good points, but you transfer tax free status to Biblical status and there is a flaw. The most important point is that Christ's saving message is clearly communicated to everyone, oppression has both strengthened and enlarged the true church.

Coach, your premise for our interaction with government is wrong. Yes, our rights are from Yahweh and Yahweh alone and our Consitution (properly upheld) will protect our first amendment right to free exercize. The issue is whether the first amendment upholds a religous institution to a tax free organization. It does not. If we are ready to speak out for Christ no matter the consequences, then we are ready to dump the tax free status and then have the freedom guaranteed under the Constitution. Jim Ricker
