Hi Dan,
I am looking through my concordances, lexicons and my TWOT and parallel versions and unfortunately, I have been unable thus far to find the meaning "convert" except once in the KJV. All other references thus far have been in relation to returning toward and returning (although not always a full return) not converting. All references seem to speak of going back toward somewhere or someone from where or whom you left previously.
Conversion is not returning to Yahweh but becoming a child of through the new birth, not a rebirth.
The Strong's number is h7725 and the entry is following (the word is in the hiphil so I cut and pasted the relevant entry portion);
וב shuwb Strong's h7725
Strong's lexicon
d) (Hiphil) to cause to return, bring back
1) to bring back, allow to return, put back, draw back, give back, restore, relinquish, give in payment
2) to bring back, refresh, restore
3) to bring back, report to, answer
4) to bring back, make requital, pay (as recompense)
5) to turn back or backward, repel, defeat, repulse, hinder, reject, refuse
6) to turn away (face), turn toward
7) to turn against
8) to bring back to mind
9) to show a turning away
10) to reverse, revoke
Can you point out other places in Scripture where this word is rendered "convert" or the like for a new action and not a return to a former place or person?
The EVS, NASB, NET (among others)use revive or restore because it seems to fit more naturally with the Hebrew. Lord knows all translations, versions and paraphrases contain errors and this would be a good test of reliability for all of us.
Grace and Peace,
Jim
