Squanto was kidnapped and made a slave. The Pilgrims arrived in the early winter and much too late to clear any land and plant crops and build shelters. But these things were to be a blessing to both Squanto and the Pilgrims. After Squanto was kidnapped his whole tribe dies of a disease and Squanto probably would have died too if he had not been kidnapped. The Pilgrims did not have time to clear any land of trees but the place where Squanto's village had been, was already cleared and the other Indians thought the land was cursed because Squanto's tribe had all died. So the Pilgrims found this spot by the grace of God and had cleared land. The Pilgrims only found the spot by a miracle, their mast had broken on the small ship for exploration and they came in this cove for repairs and found the cleared land, which is what they were looking for and had been unable to find. Sqaunto had learned English while in England and knew the land. When Squanto returned he needed a tribe and the Pilgrims needed him. Indian and Pilgrim became brothers.
