READER FEEDBACK

Huh?

What is the supposed offense from? Can you read my opening sentence from my last post Deborah? I asked ONLY for the following reason.....what did I say next? Your, "the old...argument" shows your prejudice in reading, not my intention, words or question as asking an innocent question. I asked for what may have left a bad taste in your mouth if you already read it. The rest of your post shows an overactive imagination and overreaction to your own imagination. If you can't answer a simple question then maybe you are looking to be offended or looking for a fight and seeing it where it doesn't exist. That is certainly the case here. Please try to answer a simple question instead of reading people's minds, your not good at it and it is disrespectful to others not to answer a simple question without accusing someone of doing something they didn't do or say. The old "Well, did you READ it?" argument...

While I do appreciate forming my own opinion about a subject through my own research (such as reading a book in controversy) before making an absolute statement like "I hate it", I feel delving in deep is unnecessary in this case. Listening to the opinions of others is important, but more important is "whose opinion do you listen to?" So far, I've heard rave reviews from modern evangelicals and emergent church types, and grave warnings from discernment ministry types. If they both highlight the same facts about the book but come to two totally different conclusions on the spiritual benefits of it, I'm more likely to observe the "buyer beware" sticker of the discernment types. After all, weren't they right about Todd Bentley?! So no, I have not read it. But in my defense, I also haven't read anything by Alister Crowley, Timothy Leary, or Brian Mclearen. Hope this helps! PS. Don't need to look at porn to know it's bad for ya.

Deborah, have you ever written a book?
Posted On: 08/25/08 02:19:29 PM Age 56, AZ
I have! Unless you are writing a theologial treatise on the character of God, it's impossible to cover every aspect of His nature. That's why some Christian cards say, "God loves you." They don't say, "God Loves You, but don't forget He's just!"

The Shack

Deborah, did you read the shack? I ask only because I haven't read it yet and if your reading the book left that taste in your mouth, I am wondering why. Although the intention is to read a book with an open mind, listening to others who have read a book isn't a bad thing to do. Grace and Peace, Jim

Deborah: Thanks for posting here. John

Well, that's nice and all, but...

But leaving out small details about a person's character, such as God's justice, can be VERY DANGEROUS. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you give a very honest report of yourself to another person, say an employer, but leave out a tiny detail like, "oh, well, yes, I have killed someone during an armed robbery and never was held accountable to the law", that could be potentially dangerous. God's justice is very dangerous to the unregenerate. When a book is touted as a major theological breakthrough, good for evangelism, etc., but it fails to deliver the law and the gospel but instead offers up a squishy god who loves you without any requirements of you (such as repentance and faith), any discerning christian should run the other direction. I realize the author had a tough childhood, and would prefer a god who can make a person feel all warm inside, like a cup of hot cocoa, but when we take our awesome God out of the bible and recreate Him into our image and to our liking, we are committing idolatry. Pretty scary stuff. If you liked the book, my apologies for any offense. May I recommend a piece of better work? The Gospel According to John. -Deborah

Just what IS the love of God according to "The Shack?" John

The Shack
Posted On: 08/19/08 04:18:24 PM Age 56, AZ
I read the book, "The Shack" having a Bachelor of Science in Bible from a college that was largely Baptist. Therefore, I was shocked when the author initially represented God the Father as a black woman! However, the book always returned to sound doctrine. In fact, I read it twice just to find the doctrinal errors. While there are some statements that needed better clarification, in no way would I call this an heretical book. Instead, the author represented the love of God in a brilliant way. Just as comprehending God's eternal existance is virtually mind-blowing, our relationship with God can also suffer unless it is spelled out in earthly terms. In that regard, the author succeeded.

Shack and Contending

I am no theologian but I found the Shack to be an inspiring book. Having completed it once I read it again. Now I realize depictions of our Amighty God as a woman was a stretch but in the end of the book I believe that was dispelled to comform to our understanding of the Bible. But highlighting the power of God's love and consistency opened my eyes and heart to Him and to my neighbor. At the same time the author didn't emphasize the justice of God. However, with an open mind and a desire to know and draw closer to Jesus this book by the power of God's spirit filled me with his peace and a sense of rededication.
