Why was it allowed on the next night?

I was really astonished and peeved that they did that song. Astonished that they actually sang it on national TV and, like you, peeved that they omitted the name of Jesus. I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying. However, I was really confused by the show in that, they had to change the song for the Wednesday night "AI gives back", but for their Thursday night
"results" show, they started the show off with the same song, but this time they sang it the way it is supposed to be sang..."My Jesus, my saviour..." I wonder if they got some backlash for omitting His name in the 1st place?

I was listening that night and didn't hear anything wrong with it. In fact I was over joyed to hear them singing praise to the Lord. I believe you waste way too much time "looking" for negatives. Why can't you look at the positive here....Millions heard them singing praise to the Lord!

I am a chef, and tiring singer, who if it wasn't for the age restrictions would like to appear on American Idol myself. if I, as an individual artist, choose to sing a Christian song and then it is my choice and I can sing the lyrics as written or take artistic license if I choose.
You say
" Here is the problem:
Take away the name of Jesus from the centrality of this song and "Lord" could mean anyone or anything... " that is a problem for us Christians who want to get the message of Jesus Christ out. But as you noted, AI people are probably not Christians for the most part, and it is not their mission. I am actually glad that they even included the song. And remember, in order for them not to get hate mail and be politically incorrect, they are probably also trying not to offend all different faiths and religions who use a name other than Jesus. If they didn't keep in the word Jesus, then they could be accused of trying to force a political or religious view on an audience of millions. As an individual I would include it - but for them to speak for a group of people and force everyone to say it just because it's the way it was originally written, would also be wrong, in my opinion. We win people by being salt and light - not so salty that it's not palatable, and the like not so bright as to temporarily blind someone. I'm just really glad they included the song at all. ( I guess it's kind of like those people in Alcoholics Anonymous - they have to choose to their higher power or shepherd is.) I know mine is Jesus Christ, and at least by introducing the song to people through the show, maybe more will be drawn unto him. It is the Holy Spirit that leads us and guides us into all truth. I'm glad this song gives glory to God. ( Shout to the Lord All the Earth, Let Us Sing; Power and Majesty Praise to the King!) WHEN HE IS LIFTED UP HE WILL DRAW ALL MEN UNTO HIM!
You also say, "Lord" could mean anyone or anything... " But,look at the REST of the words of the song: Mountains bow down and the sea will roar at the sound of Your name, I sing for joy at the work of Your hands, ...for ever You'll stand. Nothing compares to the promise I have in You. (Sounds like God to me.) He is Lifted Up.

On Thursday AI opened the show with the same song, except "Jesus" was put back in the lyrics. I don't mind a bit that non-believers aren't willing to take a stand for Jesus. Why should this surprise anyone? Gorge Harrison is not a fair comparison, since his song's lyrics also includes "hare krishna." But there is no doubt that "Shout to the Lord" is a Christian song. It quotes Scripture, it elevates the one true God to a place higher than any other. If anything, we should rejoice and praise God that on a secular show sung a song of worship to the most High God in front of an audience who has probably never heard such a thing! I think Mr. Camp's outrage is misplaced. I lifted up my hands in worship and wept as the AI contestants sung a great song glorifying our awesome God. Mr. Camp might consider doing the same.

Maybe AI heard you, because the group sang the song again on the results show on Thursday, and the followed the songs original lyrics, "My Jesus, My Savior.....
In fact, there have been more songs about Jesus in this year's program than any other. (e.g. Dolly Parton night).
In years past, in fact the year Mandesa sang a christian song, she was admonished by Simon for having done so, this year, they have been much more accepting. It is a small victory, but a victory, none the less.
I was however, very disappointed, at such a great show, the Ben Stiller act. That was very distasteful and very unnecessary.

My Jesus on Thursday night

They sang it again on the elimination show and this time sang the lyric right, My Jesus, My Saviour, and even the performance was stronger and more passionate. So to be fair, they did correct it and sing it again the right way. Mariah Carey sang on Idol gives back and the song was about Jesus, it was very tasteful.

I agree with eveything you said. The next night they sang the same song and said Jesus and not shepherd. I don't know if the producers knew the contestant was going to do that, but I was glad she did.

On Thursday night's Idol elimination, the top 8 sang Shout to the Lord again in the opening of American Idol, and they DID sing this time "MY JESUS, MY SAVIOUR." So, I am pretty sure the show gots lots of emails and calls regarding changing the lyrics, plus don't you need permission to change lyrics. Interestingly enough on Idol gives back, the best performance was by Mariah Carey, and she specifically was singing about Jesus a very tasteful performance, then they had the nerve to try and cover HIM up in the next song, but His named prevailed and Jesus was magnified on national television before millions of people. Makes me wonder if any idol contestants are Christians or know the lyrics to that song and said something, I know millions of viewers did.

I too noticed the change in the lyrics. Although it upset me, I wasn't surprised, since many of those involved with American Idol are either unbelievers or hiding their faith (although we can't forget Mandesa who was forthright with her faith). However, I watched the results show and was pleased that Jesus was back in the song. I was just wondering, does anyone know if American Idol received complaints about the lyrics change?

I agree with what you say here, but I hope you will post another story based on the performance the group gave at the results show on Thursday night. It was just the 8 finalists on the stage and they sang "Shout to the Lord" again, but this time they did indeed start the song "My Jesus, My Savior". I for one was very pleased to see this change. I wonder what discussion was involved in making that decision, and if AI had gotten calls complaining about the lyric change?

I don't have a problem with the heathen's distaste with Jesus. I have more of a problem that the heathen so easily sing a mushy, sugar coated church song. The darkness has no problem cursing the light, while the supposed light is trying to embrace the darkness.

I agree that they should not have left His name out of the song but I do believe they edited it for time savings and, since the producers probably aren't born again, they didn't have a clue. However, I rejoice greatly because last night they performed the song again WITH the name of Jesus!
While I wouldn't claim that all the contestants understood the power of that song, I praise God that it was sung and believe He will use it for His glory.
In Him,

I felt the same way when I heard they had omitted Jesus' name that night. You might be interested to know however, that I was told by my daughter that the next night they sang the song again and this time sang the name Jesus! Praise God.

I happened to catch the beginning of the THURSDAY night show of American Idol (not the "Gives Back" show) and was shocked to hear them sing the song "Shout to the Lord" as the opener. I watched the whole song and was listening very carefully to see if anything was changed. I am pretty sure they sang the lyrics correcly, "My Jesus, my Savior..."
Maybe they didn't on the Wednesday night show.

less then 24 hrs later, in the results show, they opened the show with this song, and did include the name of Jesus in it. I don't get why Idol removed Jesus from it the first time, (i understand ona spiritual level, they aren't beleivers) bt in any other performance the artists would be criticized and penalized for replacing a word with another one... and it's not like even the non-christians out there couldn't figure out who that song was talking about. Maybe it's just because i'm a Christian, but isn't it kind of obvious, even without HIS name in it?? anyways, they screwed it up on night one, but fixed it on night two....the author of the article should've mentioned that...

Before you get too upset about American Idol, watch the tape from last night's show. I didn't see the Idol Gives Back show, but I did watch the Thursday night show. On Thursday, they reprised the song, with full gospel choir. The lyrics were loud and clear. Three of the American Idols (Brook, David Archuleta, and Kristie Lee) sang "My Jesus, my Savior, Lord there is none like you" very clearly. I replayed it for my husband later. We were both amazed. So praise God, a very clear testament of Jesus as Savior and Lord, Shelter, Tower of Refuge and Strength, and more. It was a rousing rendition, and I might just play it back again.

It really doesn't surprise me at all that they replaced "My Jesus" with "My Shepherd" being it IS secular entertainment. What DID surprise me though was the following night [Thursday, where the results of the Idol vote were to be revealed.] that the first song of the evening was yet again "Shout to the Lord" and they DID include "My Jesus" at the beginning of the song. Now, having said that, it does not mean that they could have been singing to the Jesus of the Bible. We all know that Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses for example refer to an entirely different Jesus. Not saying that the 'Idol' contestants or producers are Mormons or JWs. I just found it surprising that the lyric change would happen at all. <Eric<
