tempest in a teapot.

I heard about the song being sung on American Idol and the change of Jesus to shepherd. I can only say--so what. It is the world doing this and should we really be surprised???? I am grateful they even sang the song(though I do not watch Idol). I love Jesus and nothing the world will or will not do can cause me to be surprised. After all, without the Holy Spirit, what else can we expect and where would we be as well?

No compromise

Love the song and the intent was good. But to a lost and dying world, it is just another pleasing melody if they do not know about Jesus. As believers, we cannot compromise His Name.

American Idol, Shout to the Who?.....
Posted On: 04/13/08 03:09:55 PM Age 63, MO
Steve Camp, I read your e-mail about American Idol contestants singing, Shout to the Lord. I was watching that show and for my part, I was happy and blessed that they chose to sing a Christian song. I don't know about you, Jesus is my "shepherd" and Lord, there is none like you. Why can't we be happy they sang the song. The problem with the extreme right, they are just as bad as the extreme left. I am assuming your article voices your view and thinking, so I would call you extreme. A week ago Dolly Parton was the guest celebrity and sang Jesus and Gravity. Several of the songs chosen by the contestants were about Jesus and faith. I didn't see an e-mail from you giving the show any positive remarks about that night. It is this kind of thinking and articles written that help the mainstream media criticize the Evangelical movement. I am a born again christian who shares my faith on a daily basis. I want people to see a positive happy person rather than someone who is critical. I would far rather hear young people singing "Shout to the Lord," than some rap music praising the devil, degrading women and saying murder is fun. You lose me on this one and many people I know who have read your article. Thank you for taking the time for read my thoughts. Blessings, Ruth Light Raytown, Mo

Which Jesus?
Posted On: 04/13/08 02:15:53 PM Age 35, KY
I agree that it is unfortunate that Idol decided to censor the name of Jesus for apparently politically correct reasons (although they sang "Shout to the Lord" the following night and included the original - interesting). This has been a trend in our culture for some time now - a desire for a generic deity that all can call "lord" or "god." So wouldn't it be best to be more specific in naming who is praised, like using the name of "Jesus" or "Christ"? Not necessarily. We now have to ask, "Which Jesus?" The Jesus of Mormons? Jehovah's Witnesses? the New Age movement? liberals? pop culture? Oprah? Each of these could sing "Shout to the Lord" - even with the original lyrics - and find it well within their theological/spiritual framework. This is not a criticism of the song itself, for there are several great hymns that fall into this category as well (like "Amazing Grace"). The problem lies in defining who we praise, who we name. The Jesus who died to save us from wrath, who raised on the third day, who is the only path of salvation - the Jesus who is very God of very God, begotten not made - this is the Christian Jesus Christ, and this is the Jesus who is to be the object of the song "Shout to the Lord." My wife and I were watching American Idol when they sang "Shout to the Lord." We didn't know whether to be encouraged or dismayed. The more I think about, the latter feeling is winning out. Non-defined spirituality is not what the world or the church needs. What we all need is the Jesus of the Bible.

Steve, A psalm of praise to the King of creation is sung before millions and you can't rejoice? C'mon Steve. None of the Psalms mention Jesus by name, do they? Psalm 23 -- the Lord is my shepherd -- is thus diminished in your eyes? And, have you ever been to Mars Hill, they're nowhere near showy or slick as an AI set. Maybe Willow Creek, but not Mars Hill. I've loved your music for years, still remembering some of your albums -- Run to the Battle, and Fire and Ice. Don't you realize that folks criticised you back then for being too worldly in your style and ministry? What has become of you? Can you not rejoice that the Lord is glorified? Finally, did you catch AI last week when Jesus was clearly proclaimed twice (by name) on the program?

"Jesus" sung on the following night
Posted On: 04/12/08 11:31:19 PM Age 33, FL
I didn't see this last week, and I am saddened to hear they took out the Name above all names, Jesus; however I did see the following night's episode and they sang the song again. This is one of my favorite worship songs and I almost fell out of my chair when I heard Ryan Seacrest introduce the song "Shout to the Lord"!!! I had it recorded actually and this time they DID say "JESUS"!!!!! I couldn't help but feel so happy that those contestants were praising God with their lips (even if they didn't know what they were doing) God works in mysterious ways. I know that this is God reaching out to ALL of us (viewers and contestants) and inviting and drawing us to HIM. Praise be Jesus!

I hope you took note that the name of Jesus was used on Idol the Results Show on Thursday night. Cut these people some slack. This site is starting to sound very critical and a little hateful.

Thanks Steve...Did You See Thursday's Idol...They Sang, My Jesus...
Posted On: 04/12/08 09:54:42 PM Age 50, OH
Thanks Steve for the great article. I was so ticked when I saw that. I sent an e-mail to Hillsong Music in Australia...hoping they would forward that to Darlene Zschech.I thought it was also breaking the copyright! Did you catch Thursday Night's American Idol? The opening song was "Shout To The Lord"and they actually sang it, "My Jesus, My Saviour"! That was very surprising! God Bless, Merry

Get your facts right!

I watched the show. I also DVR's the show. The live broadcast the words were "My Jesus, My Savior" and there was no comedian after the performance. The version you viewed on YouTube was altered, not the TV Show. As a Minister of Music, I find it very important that we (Christians) not point fingures too quickly. It sometimes will come back to make us look bad. I've been wrong too many times in my life to believe everything I read or see on the Internet or in print in the paper. Love your music Steve, keep pointing people to Jesus.

The Name of Jesus
Posted On: 04/12/08 06:35:23 PM Age 44, NH
You are so right brother! In general, people can handle the word God however the next time you reading this are about to say "God Bless You" to someone, say instead "May the Lord Jesus Christ the only true God bless you" Se what happends. Thank you brother for pointing out the important fact that without the Name by which all authority is given, that beautiful song has no power since people may fill in any name that makes them comfortable. Good job pointing that out! -Dr. David M. Berman

Why was it allowed on the next night?

I was really astonished and peeved that they did that song. Astonished that they actually sang it on national TV and, like you, peeved that they omitted the name of Jesus. I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying. However, I was really confused by the show in that, they had to change the song for the Wednesday night "AI gives back", but for their Thursday night "results" show, they started the show off with the same song, but this time they sang it the way it is supposed to be sang..."My Jesus, my saviour..." I wonder if they got some backlash for omitting His name in the 1st place?

You have gone OVERBOARD on this one!!!!

I was listening that night and didn't hear anything wrong with it. In fact I was over joyed to hear them singing praise to the Lord. I believe you waste way too much time "looking" for negatives. Why can't you look at the positive here....Millions heard them singing praise to the Lord! Don Andersen Age:66

I am a chef, and tiring singer, who if it wasn't for the age restrictions would like to appear on American Idol myself. if I, as an individual artist, choose to sing a Christian song and then it is my choice and I can sing the lyrics as written or take artistic license if I choose. You say " Here is the problem: Take away the name of Jesus from the centrality of this song and "Lord" could mean anyone or anything... " that is a problem for us Christians who want to get the message of Jesus Christ out. But as you noted, AI people are probably not Christians for the most part, and it is not their mission. I am actually glad that they even included the song. And remember, in order for them not to get hate mail and be politically incorrect, they are probably also trying not to offend all different faiths and religions who use a name other than Jesus. If they didn't keep in the word Jesus, then they could be accused of trying to force a political or religious view on an audience of millions. As an individual I would include it - but for them to speak for a group of people and force everyone to say it just because it's the way it was originally written, would also be wrong, in my opinion. We win people by being salt and light - not so salty that it's not palatable, and the like not so bright as to temporarily blind someone. I'm just really glad they included the song at all. ( I guess it's kind of like those people in Alcoholics Anonymous - they have to choose to their higher power or shepherd is.) I know mine is Jesus Christ, and at least by introducing the song to people through the show, maybe more will be drawn unto him. It is the Holy Spirit that leads us and guides us into all truth. I'm glad this song gives glory to God. ( Shout to the Lord All the Earth, Let Us Sing; Power and Majesty Praise to the King!) WHEN HE IS LIFTED UP HE WILL DRAW ALL MEN UNTO HIM! You also say, "Lord" could mean anyone or anything... " But,look at the REST of the words of the song: Mountains bow down and the sea will roar at the sound of Your name, I sing for joy at the work of Your hands, ...for ever You'll stand. Nothing compares to the promise I have in You. (Sounds like God to me.) He is Lifted Up.

Partly Right

On Thursday AI opened the show with the same song, except "Jesus" was put back in the lyrics. I don't mind a bit that non-believers aren't willing to take a stand for Jesus. Why should this surprise anyone? Gorge Harrison is not a fair comparison, since his song's lyrics also includes "hare krishna." But there is no doubt that "Shout to the Lord" is a Christian song. It quotes Scripture, it elevates the one true God to a place higher than any other. If anything, we should rejoice and praise God that on a secular show sung a song of worship to the most High God in front of an audience who has probably never heard such a thing! I think Mr. Camp's outrage is misplaced. I lifted up my hands in worship and wept as the AI contestants sung a great song glorifying our awesome God. Mr. Camp might consider doing the same.

Maybe AI heard you, because the group sang the song again on the results show on Thursday, and the followed the songs original lyrics, "My Jesus, My Savior..... In fact, there have been more songs about Jesus in this year's program than any other. (e.g. Dolly Parton night). In years past, in fact the year Mandesa sang a christian song, she was admonished by Simon for having done so, this year, they have been much more accepting. It is a small victory, but a victory, none the less. I was however, very disappointed, at such a great show, the Ben Stiller act. That was very distasteful and very unnecessary.

My Jesus on Thursday night

They sang it again on the elimination show and this time sang the lyric right, My Jesus, My Saviour, and even the performance was stronger and more passionate. So to be fair, they did correct it and sing it again the right way. Mariah Carey sang on Idol gives back and the song was about Jesus, it was very tasteful.

I agree with eveything you said. The next night they sang the same song and said Jesus and not shepherd. I don't know if the producers knew the contestant was going to do that, but I was glad she did.

song personalized to Jesus Thursday night show.
Posted On: 04/12/08 08:44:48 AM Age 46, CA
On Thursday night's Idol elimination, the top 8 sang Shout to the Lord again in the opening of American Idol, and they DID sing this time "MY JESUS, MY SAVIOUR." So, I am pretty sure the show gots lots of emails and calls regarding changing the lyrics, plus don't you need permission to change lyrics. Interestingly enough on Idol gives back, the best performance was by Mariah Carey, and she specifically was singing about Jesus a very tasteful performance, then they had the nerve to try and cover HIM up in the next song, but His named prevailed and Jesus was magnified on national television before millions of people. Makes me wonder if any idol contestants are Christians or know the lyrics to that song and said something, I know millions of viewers did.
