Great overview. Historical context.

I really appreciated your overview. I thought it might be good also to include the historical background surrounding the writing of Romans since, at least in my view; it helps us understand some of what Paul is writing. Historical Facts surrounding the writing of Romans: Claudius, who reigned from 41-54 C.E. expelled the Jews, some 20,000, from Rome. (See Acts 18:2) This event is referred to by Suetonius and others and can be dated to C.E. 49 (McRay, pp. 225-226). After the death of Claudius, his expulsion decree expired with him and the Jews returned to Rome in 54 C.E. and following. The Book of Romans was likely written between 56-58 C.E. Nero blames Christians for the fire in Rome in 64 C.E. What would be at issue is that the Gentile converts were left in Rome to "walk" in their new faith without the aid of the Jewish traditions (some good, some not so good). What happens when these Jews (not all believers) return and find Gentiles living out the Law in their own way and not like the Jews do? Just a thought. Sean Daily

"Romans"
Posted On: 03/07/08 02:26:13 PM Age 61, NY
The Book of Romans is truely our roadmap to living the Christian life. It teaches Sanctification via Faith in the Cross and this allows the Holy Spirit to work in us. Romans chapter 6 tells us "how" to walk; Romans chapter 7 tells us what happens to us when we don't walk by Faith in the Finished Work of Christ and Romans chapter 8 tell us of the blessing and victory we can have but if we don't "get" Romans 6, we will relive Romans 7 continually and never experience Romans 8. Colossians 2:6 "As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him." The way we come in, keeps us in. Continual Faith in the Finished Work of Christ allows the Holy Spirit to perform the Sanctification process, it His job; we just must believe. Christ is our Focus, the Cross the means and the Holy Spirit our power source. It is simple faith in the correct object. Yes, Romans is a wonderful Book!

Lou is short for Louis which is the German spelling and a mans name. The name Louis means victorious warrior. I am not a woman but a man. I know many other men by the name Lou. Lou

The Holy Spirit is the Greatest Teacher

I applaud this lady; she has just discovered one of life's great truths: The Comforter will teach you all things, whatsoever I have commanded.... He didn't need to go to seminary, He KNOWS TRUTH, and when He reveals it to one, they are never the same again, for they have had a God Encounter. We study to show ourselves approved, but it is the Holy Spirit that testifies to Truth, and when He testifies, everyone around is changed.

Doctrinal, Dispensational, and Practical.

Good article from Chuck Missler. And Romans is a great book, full of everything one needs to understand the basics of Christianity. While Chuck likes to break it down into doctrinal, dispensational and practical, I prefer the way that Kay Arthur breaks the chapters of Romans down into Sin,Salvation and Sanctification.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BOOK OF ROMANS
Posted On: 03/01/08 10:55:13 AM Age 64, OH
Romans;what a Book that is written by the one man, who is only a man, that makes me so aware that I am nothing. When I was a high school teacher, I took an entire summer and shut my self in my house and read the book of Romans everyday all day long. I studied the Book in every way I could think of. I would take every verse and pray and ask God to show me how it applied to me. I listened to the whole book in a very short time on tapes to get an overall view. I spent over 1000 hours in the book of Romans just that one summer. I memorized many parts of the book. I thought I knew the book. Then some years later, I was in Florida, at a church called "Liberty Church" and the Lord spoke to me, "Don't you know that I have bound all men over to disobedience so that I may have mercy on them all". Then He said get up and prophesy to the people. I said Lord my heart tells me that this is you but could you prove that by showing that in the Bible. The Lord said Romans 11:32. I open my Bible and was stunned. It was as someone had added that statement to Romans. I do not remember ever seeing it before. I then got up and did as the Lord commanded and the book of Romans came forth for several minutes out of my lips. While my lips were speaking all I could think, was, boy is this good. I sat down and looked and the people were all kneeling at the pews or face down on the floor. I was very humbled by the Lord that day. I learned that the Holy Spirit speaking the scripture is entirely different than any man reading it, and I found out I had just started my study of the book of Romans. Lou
