What is the rest of the last paragraph? It ends with "Amer" and no period, so I assume there is more.

I do not accept the underlying premise of much of what you have to say. The U.S.'s "moral foundation" began with a fraction of the population in rebellion against the lawful authorities (for petty reasons at that) with terrorists who shot law enforcement from the bushes-murdering men following the lawful government's authority. Yet professing Christians honor these murderers as heros. Scripture tells us to obey EVERY ordinance of man (except those that conflict with the clear written requirements of God-not ones imagined in the hearts of sinful men). To this day our leaders use a modicum of self-righteousness to clothe their arrogant abuse of power and rain murderous fury upon others innocent of any wrong beyond that mankind normally does (Korea, Vietnam, Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq).
Many nations have thought themselves Christian. Even Russia thought itself a Christian nation, and went to war to stop the spread of democracy in Europe. The Czar considered himself the last hope of Christianity and attempted to stop the destruction of God-appointed monarchies. As you can tell, he lost. Democracy brought with it the destruction of their moral roots, too. The Russians Christianity eventually led to the murderous establishment of God's millennial kingdom on earth by the will and force of man. What a disaster!
While no Christian would argue we should stray further from Scriptural truth-for more evil, a wise Christian will not moan for the old days that had its own evil. Instead, do what is right and live quiet, peaceable lives. There have always been genuine Christians tempering the evil of the nation.

Sean, the greatest threat to America is not secular humanism. The new spirituality teachings that are sweeping America made the cover of Time magazine a month ago with a woman meditating on the front cover. Spirituality, not secularism, is big now, but dominated by eastern religious roots. Rationalism is dead. Secular humanism is dead. The new global spirituality that is emerging in thousand different ways through media, books and magazines represents a frightening rejection of the Christian religion and an embracing of a cosmic religion that they believe will bring peace to the planet. This is a critical difference from what Sean is saying.

You mention the period of Judges and the relative liberty that the people enjoyed as a bad thing. I personally never read it that way. It mentions the passage you quoted in two different places (Judges 17:6; 21:25) and seemingly out of context. To shed light on the issue, we turn to 1 Samuel 8. A reading of the entire passage lets up know that while the judges had become corrupt, their rule was still preferable over that of a king. The LORD conceded, however, and gave the people what they wanted, but it was not what God wanted. 1 Samuel 12:17 says, "Is it not the wheat harvest today? I will call to the LORD, that He may send thunder and rain. Then you will know and see that your wickedness is great which you have done in the sight of the LORD by asking for yourselves a king."
They rejected God as their king in favor of a man.
I think we have to ask ourselves if we are more concerned with the behaviors of others and with our own safety and security, or rather with who we are serving.
