Jesus was a Son of David (descendant of David)through David’s son Nathan. The Genealogy listed in Luke is Mary’s genealogy. The greek text of Luke 3:23 is: iesous (Jesus) …..huios (which refers to son or kin such as grandson, great grandson, etc), Joseph, Heli,…etc. Joseph was Jesus adopted father, Heli was his grandfather(Mary’s father) In the greek text huios only appears before Joseph. In other words the English text more properly tanslating the text would be “Jesus… (as was supposed) the son or kin of Joseph, of Heli, of Matthat, etc." Some English bibles like my NKJV italicized the words “the son” in every place except Joseph indicating those words are not in the original Greek.
Joseph was the adoptive earthly father if you will of Jesus. Luke also indicates this by his use of the term “being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph.
Jesus also inherited the kingly line from David’s son Solomon when Joseph became his earthly father. Joseph’s genealogy is listed in Matthew. The last king of Judah who was a descendant of David’s son Solomon was Zedekiah. 2Kings 24:20 – 2Chronicles 36:10.
To fulfill the prophecies of the prophets Jesus had to be a Son of David and also he had to be Israel’s long awaited King. And God did this in a very wonderful manner through the Virgin birth and bringing Joseph and Mary together as husband and wife.

I thought Jesus' lineage from David was to both Mary and Joseph.

I agree that the lineages between the two are of Joseph and of Mary. Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum has a wonderful study explaining not only the Jeconiah issue, but also of the qualifiers that indicate that one of the Gospels speaks of a male and the other of a female.

Consider that Mathew's genealogy is that of Mary and not Joseph's. The last Joseph on the list being Mary's Father not husband. (Confirmed in some Hebrew manuscripts of Mathew)1 This would also add the missing generation bringing the total to 14 and not 13 correcting this apparent Biblical blunder.
Perfect fit also with the Genesis account and with Jeremiah as previously noted. Jeremiah 22:24-30. Jesus' linage is truly from the seed of a woman, as prophesied in Genesis.
This would also solve the Luke dilemma, which would then not conflict. Luke = Joseph's lineage. Mathew = Mary's lineage.
1. The Jewish Yeshuah vs. The Greek Jesus, Written by Nehemiah Gordon. (Although not a Christian, very insightful)

My studies tell me that Matthew's genealogy of Joseph included Jechoniah or Coniah (V.11)which disqualifies Joseph's linage; the reason being found in Jerehmiah 22:24-30. Jesus' linage is truely from the seed of a woman, as prophesied in Genesis.
