Maybe the ACLJ should get involved. Few really KNOW the constitutional 'allowances'.
Of course, the local board may fire you. But maybe the ACLJ is worth a shot. They have done some pretty good things this last year and their lawyers are always available by phone to advise. My kids are now being home schooled. Oregon is NOT a good school environment and gets progressivly worse in the high school years. Well done anyway, LOU!! PGW

Hi Herb, I was elected an officer in the NEA my first year teaching. I was not a Christian but gave my life to Jesus the next year. I refused to run for office then refused to join the NEA. I was fired for giving out Bibles in my class every year. I only brought them into class and offered on to anyone who would come up and get one. Every year every student took one. Lou

This is a problem nation wide. In the town I live in a popular CHRISTIAN school also assigns books with smut and foul language. When my neice and her parents voiced their complaints they were brushed off.

What bothers me is the hypocrisy. Say, for instance, a total stranger were to approach the kids of this school and start describing sexual feelings or encounters to them. You had best believe that the school officials would have that fellow arrested without thinking twice. However, they feel that they are "educating" children by doing precisely the same thing!...Oh, yes, I forgot; many public-school teachers consider their classrooms to be target-rich environments for their sex lives. I guess what they would find offensive is the competition. Word to the concerned parent: giving sexually explicit material to an underaged person is considered "immoral conduct" in almost all of the fifty states.--Mrs. Pilgrim

I don't know about Ohio, but in CA one must belong to the NEA to teach in the public schools. I know few who agree with NEA, but some find it nice for cheap auto insurance! Whatever. Bottom line is short of a parental revolt and a costly recall election nothing will change until the next election of the board members. If the parents don't back a slate of real Christian candidates the issues portrayed by this article will never cease. Unfortunately, home schooling is not a viable option for most of the nation and vouchers will accomplish nothing if the alternative isn't Biblically based. Blessings to you, Lou. I think that this problem is much more common and pervasive than people realize. A local KC school board refused to change education policy on reading material when presented with a petition signed by over 500 parents. Parents are ultimately responsible for their children, not for the choices of the school board or a curriculum committee. It would appear that the school officials in charge do not view things the same way as the parents. If I were a parent there, I would thank the school board for helping me realize what a poor choice I had made by placing my confidence in them and helping me decide to homeschool my children. Then I would contact HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association) and find out how to get started in homeschooling if I didn't already know a homeschool family to help me get started. And I would do this ASAP rather than trying to redeem this situation. The school officals have already demonstrated a hard heart to the situation. Homeschooling our own since they were little has been one of the most precious ways we have been drawn to care for our children who are now 16 and 18. You can easily teach your own better than a "certified, professional educator."

The NEA is the most guilty for this fall of our educational system. All who had anything to do with the choosing of these books should be fired. Even elected officials can be recalled such as school board officials. Lou

Is the author, Matt Barber, the man who was fired by Allstate Insurance for his comments against the homosexual agenda written while off duty, and from his own home?

The district's website gives their mission statement as this: Our mission is to graduate responsible and self-confident students who are prepared for the challenges of high school and beyond through a personalized education which provides a sound academic foundation and promotes the student's social, emotional and physical development in a safe, supportive environment.
Their motto is "Where Children Are First"

I'm certain that if I were to use such foul language in conversation with one or the other, my educational status would be questioned, as well as my suitability for interaction with any of their students. I'm also certain that if any of their students were to use such language in a paper or oral report, the instructor would give whatever reprimand was in his/her arsenal.
How does foul language and smutty overtoned literature help a child to grow wise, make better decisions, elevate him/herself to a higher level? Yes, they hear it every day. Does that make it the best they can be? No, it lowers them to the lowest common denominator. If the school system's goal is to bring out the best in each child, then it should use literature that demands from the child: demands that child's concentration, higher emotion, critical thinking, and spurs the child to learn more. It shouldn't just reinforce the degradation of the society in which the child lives.
Email the two, and see if there's any response! Perhaps if they're flooded with national notoriety, they'll back down!

It's not the teachers you want to go after. It's the school board that sets educational policy. One should check guidelines set by the Illinois State Department of Education. Teachers teach or assign what they are told or they leave the arena of public education. I can't comment knowledgeably about Illinois ed. policy; however, California policy does have some sleight-of-hand tactics for overlooking certain dictates that violate an individuals moral precepts. I work with many Christian educators in the public system and many times a mental lapse occurs. It all depends on the individual. Herb

When are we going to wise up and STOP referring to this type of perverted material by using such respectful words as "MATURE" and "ADULT"!
To call this material "ADULT" and "MATURE" is to play right into their hands by using their terminology for this GARBAGE!
It completely waters down your offensive tactics by whitewashing the terminology to suit their hardened hearts and ears.

As a former teacher of middle school students, I can't imagine any teacher assigning this mind garbage to any student. As an adult, I would never read that kind of moral trash myself. Where are the adults in that school system?

HELLO..this administration promised to get the DSHS office out of Federal gov, as our constitution declars it should NOT be there. no promises kept yet ? it would get G-d's attenion and the gov if we would all stand up ! take back your country and put in a honest crew..LIKE the CP or kiss all freedom bye bye and yeah don't forget to buy a headdress..why whine when you can do this instead of complaining

What possible value are they finding in forcing this kind of trash into innocent minds? Does it make them feel "hip and cool" with the kiddies, or worse, are they genuinely bent on further blurring the lines of morality in the next generation?
Whichever it may be, they have NO business teaching our kids! They should be fired immediately.
Just another STRONG vote for home schooling.

I was exposed to these kind of assignments 8 years ago in a rural Nebraska public school. In fact, it has been going on for quite a while. Maybe not in quite the volume as this example, but it is just a product of humanist death-culture. I was assigned "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath in 6th grade, which glorifies depresseion and suicide. In 11th grade we had to read poems that dealt with how to cut someone's throat, prostitution, and the lighter side of adultery. Not to mention the numerous adlut themes and language that you read but didn't tell your parents about. This is why when I became a Christian, I seperated myself from this filth and decided to homeschool my children. Read "What are they teaching our children?" by Mel and Norma Gabler, or "The How and Why of Homeschooling" by Ray E Ballman for more insight into what your children are really exposed to in public school. It's not the three R's any longer, believe me.

I can only imagine that the principal is giving parents every incentive for voting for an education voucher system, where parents are free to send their kids where they choose.
I wonder if the NEA ever thinks about actions...consequences?
And what is he going to do when the parents say NO and do their own reading assignments?
I do know that by age 12 - 13 I was reading 'Brave New World' (Aldous Huxley), 'The Count of Monte Cristo' (Dumas), and 'Lord of The Rings' (Tolkien), as well as most of Mark Twains material. And this principle is going to say his choices are better with a straight face?
They are living in la-la land.
