Why do I get the impression that you yourself are an atheist? Is it the use of "CE"? Perhaps the "mythical resurrection" comment? Or perhaps it's just the fact that you completely missed the point of the article, as most atheists do who try to meddle in Christian affairs?--Mrs. Pilgrim

Paul the Apostle said that if Jesus had not been raised then our faith is futile and are to be pitied more than all men. One of the ways of destroying Christianity is to create doubt that the resurection occured. One tactic is to deny that Jesus died on the cross, ergo, no death no resurection. You may not believe that Jesus was resurected, but Paul certainly did, as did the other Apostles who died a martyrs death proclaiming the crucifixtion and resurection of Jesus Christ. Jesus in his admonishion to Thomas said that those of us who have not seen, yet believe, will be blessed.

THE OT SAYS GOD HAD TO BE CRUCIFIED
Posted On: 08/24/07 05:55:15 PM Age 63, OH
Brother I like your articles and this is no exception, thanks. The Jews say the OT is from God Almighty. The Koran calls the Jews the people of the Book. The Koran states that the scriptures the Jews had were from God but that the Jews did not do as the Book said. So both the Jew and the Muslim should be able to know from the OT that God Almighty had to become a Man and die on the cross. The whole OT shows us that we are all sinners that have lost our inheritance. Look at the book of Ruth. Naomi left the promised land and lost her inheritance. She came back to the town of the birth of THE KINSMAN REDEEMER. Both Boaz and Jesus were born in Bethlehem. She sent Ruth to Boaz who was her close relative. Boaz redeemed Ruth and her land. God did not forget about the law and allow Naomi and Ruth in under mercy alone. But God had provided a higher law by which to redeem those who had lost their inheritance. The law of the Kinsmen Redeemer was a law of the Lord Almighty, for all of God's judgments are mercy. Under this law the KR could not be just anyone. The KR had to be a really close relative. Not just any relative but the closest one was 1st in line. That KR also had to BE ABLE TO REDEEM. It made no difference if the man was willing he also had to be able to pay the price required for the land. But he also had to be willing to pay the price required. Any person who has sinned one sin is guilty of all as the OT says. A person who sins loses their inheritance in the "promised land". Moses could not go in for striking the rock twice. Who could redeem the Jew or the Muslim. The KR had to be the closest of relatives. An angel is not our closest relative. Even God Almighty is NOT OUR CLOSEST RELATIVE. The KR had to be a Man who was our closest relative. But the KR had to be able to pay the price for our sin. Only a spotless Lamb would do. What Man is without any sin. We are without hope. No, praise God there is a Lamb that is spotless. Only God is righteous for it is written in the OT. No one but God could pay the price for us to be redeemed from sin. But the KR also had to be willing to pay that price. THE WAGES OF SIN ARE DEATH. Who would ever be willing to die for men who were sinners and not faithful. Praise God Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior was willing to die on the cross to show us that he loved us and so we could be with Him forever. The Book of the Jews shows all that God Almighty had to become a man and die on the cross for us to live with Him forever. Lou

The article starts with, "No serious historian doubts the existence of Jesus Christ". But niether do most Atheists. Nor do most historians and Atheists deny his crucifixion. There's nothing extra-ordinary there. Less than 100 years earlier, the Roman republic crucified hundreds of Sparticus's rebels along the Appian way. No historians and few others deny this. In Judea Jesus wasn't the first messianic claimant (Judas the Gallilean) or revolutionary to suffer that fate, nor was he the last before the war of 70CE(Benjamin the Egpytian). The article really can only truly claim the Sunni disbelief of the crucifixion. And so what ? But, almost every historian would question the resurrection and classify it as the most mythical part of the story. That's the extra-ordinary part of the story. Many Christians accept the resurrection as true. But people believe what they want to believe and what they are conditioned to believe. In modern times a very large group of Christians accept the miracles of Fatima and Lourdes. Yet another group does not (despite even better attestation than Jesus's resurrection). Another group of Christians believe a modern prophet found a set of gold plates in Palmyra New York. Others do not. And the Sunni Muslims believe with all their hearts that Mohammed and his horse rode into heaven from Jerusalem. We can conclude that people have their traditions and beliefs of extraordinary events. And what of it ? This author misses the mark. There is little extra-ordinary about Jesus's crucifixion, it was his mythical resurrection that was and is at issue. I fail to see what point the author has made save for an anti-Sunni polemic and a weak attempt at an anti-atheist one.

If you really want to know the RISEN CHRIST, read the OLD TESTAMENT. Much more detail. HE was the one through whom all things were created. If you want a first person account of what HE is like, in detail, it is there. HE DOES NOT CHANGE!!

Jesus Really Was Crucified, but Did He Really Die?
Posted On: 08/22/07 06:14:57 PM Age 48, NEW ZEALAND
Only wishful thinking atheists believe Jesus wasn't crucified, but most Christians are not sure that he really died. Satan told Eve, "thou shalt not surely die," and most people still believe that all those people in the cemetery are dead but "not surely." Why else is it the safest place in the city? People don't go there at night in case the dead aren't really dead. They've been taught all their lives that dead people have "gone to heaven"!! Really? They're not dead then, are they? Did Jesus really die, then? If He didn't, us Christians are in deep, deep trouble!

I commend you for a good, positive article. Sometimes we get so familiar with the story that we miss the facts of its obvious historical setting and the unreason of those who claim that it was made up.

Well said John Piper, I think every Christian should print this out and keep a copy to hand to all those who ask "Why do you think Christianity is the true religion", I don't think we could say it any better than this you did in this article. God Bless - Sandi Bonavita

This is perhaps the most concise and precise treatment of this issue that I have read. It clearly draws a line in the sand as to where the true division lies between the Christian all the other world religions. We as Christians worship a Crucified and raised Savior. The Crucifixion is essential to the Resurrection and in the Resurrection rest our very hope. For as the scripture clearly states: if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:14-22 (NASB) Thus, our hope as Christians rests in this that Christ was Crucified and Resurrected which means we too can hope in the resurrection of our dying bodies. That we need no longer fear death but be freed to live in absolute submission to God and his will by life or by death.
