This is a very distressing article but the comments are even more distressing generally. Where is Christian love, forgiveness, the sense that we are all sinners and that includes President Bush, Mr. Baldwin, and each one of these commentators, except for one pastor who stressed that we should pray for our leaders. That is what we are commanded to do. When we see weaknesses and sin, we are called to pray harder, real meaningful prayers. I just downloaded some Puritan prayers. They knew how to pray. They understood the reality of our sinful nature and the need for Christ and His forgiving grace. Pray for President Bush to see the truth, the lies of satan and have the courage to follow Jesus and not man.

WOW! Where were these comments when all these traits were blatant during GWBush’s first presidential campaign; when in the first weeks of office by executive order he prevented access to government documents and increased secrecy; and when he not only selected the VP but the other cabinet members from junior officers during the RR and Nixon years who had learned from cabinet members of these previous administration their arrogance and defiance of the public good. Your insight is seven years too late. By the way, if you will watch in the east you can see a sunrise in the mornings. It is good training for seeing the politically obvious. Solution: Vote against all incumbents for the next twelve years and always vote against any politician or any of his staff who talks to a lobbyist. If the majority would do this, only then, might we start to build a government in America that answers to the people. This might also be a bad idea. old glen

This article smells of arrogance itself, as well as makes unfair and impossible judgements. We can't possibly know the motives behind the actions of those in the current administration. Only God knows that. We can disagree with decisions and state why but, to assume that arrogance is behind it reminds me of something C.S. Lewis once said. "The more pride one has, the more they dislike pride in others."

Wow, Mr. Nofziger said that? Why'd he wait shortly before passing away to say it? He should've been screaming that from the rooftops years ago. Ron Paul, presidential candidate, is saying that now and has been saying it for many years. Just nobody has been paying attention since Mainstream media refuses to do its job, which is to scrutinize the actions of the Executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Now that the country is in so much turmoil, people are beginning to look for the truth. It may be already too late. God has given us the government we deserve. The country turned its back on God and He's gonna do likewise so we might turn back to Him.

Mr. Baldwin seems to forget the arrogance displayed by the various Christian groups in the U.S. that so often influence our government.

I loved all your definitions and examples of "arrogance." I strongly agree with a good deal of what you said. However, and here's the "but"--The dealings with the two border gaurds were absolutely, astoundingly, unfair and wrong! It angers me, too! BUT we must realize that the whole immigration ordeal and this ordeal of misjustice regarding the guards, stem not so much from arrogance--I do not believe Prs. Bush is arrogant--I believe he knows and sees much more in depth that anyone else and he cannot tell all the picture. I don't agree with this approach--but I also know sometimes it is necessary especially when dealing with our generation of everybody--even the dumbest--who think they know everything and how everything should be handled. We are in a huge battle with the rest of the world and we, though the strongest nation, are still small comparatively speaking--land mass. He is working on the NAU and Sea Treaty and the NAU program is the basis for his demanding the we grant amnesty to the millions of illegals and also is behind his decison regarding the border agents. Disgusting I know! BUT, again, because of our sinful abortion/homosexuality/public schools, we are lacking the numbers of young people we need to "protect" us militarily and like it or not, I HATE IT! we now need the numbers!!! God help us! We are in a spiral downward. This is one of the reasons Pres. Bush is doing what he is doing--I think he is for globalization (I HATE THIS TOO), but I think he is doing the only thing he can right now. HE IS IN A HORRIBLE BIND AND WE NEED TO PRAY FOR HIM. THE ARROGANCE IS DOMINATING THE ATHEISTIC & POLYTHEISTIC LIBERAL LEFT SOCIALIST DEMOCRAT PARTY NOW---NOW THAT IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF ARROGANCE---ALONG WITH THE ABSOLUTE ARROGANCE OF THE "NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSN TEACHERS' UNION" WHO DICTATE CURRICULUM OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS (NOT HOMOSEXUALITY TAUGHT TO KINDERGARTNERS!!!) WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY SHOULD BE ONLY FOR PROTECTION OF THE BENEFITS OF THE TEACHERS. NOW ANYONE WHO IS STRONG ENOUGH TO DO AN EXPOSE' OF THE NEA---THAT IS THE AREA TO TACKLE IF WE CARE ABOUT THE GRAND OLE' USA. ALTHOUGH, REALLY, IT'S TOO LATE---THEY'VE MADE LIBERAL SOCIALIST DEMOCRAT VOTERS OUT OF OUR CHILDREN FOR THE PAST 35 BRAINWASHING YEARS OF PUBLIC SCHOOLING.

I have read and reread the commentary posted by Dr. Baldwin. While I respect very much his credentials and personal accomplishments, I humbly disagree with his overall premise and argument made. As Viet Nam Vet of two tours, I know what it was like to second guess our leaders and the consequences of that second guessing. There have been many steps and missteps that this administration has taken that I am troubled by. And as much as I would say something to our President, I think I will do what all evangelical Christians should do and that is to PRAY for our president and leaders. I accept the sovereignty of our FATHER and did so when Bill Clinton was in office. We are told to render unto Caesar what is his and to God, what is God. We are also admonished to pray for and obey our leaders. As a man of God who has a pulpit, I am surprised that Dr. Baldwin has taken on such an attitude. Are the President and his administration arrogant, yes, they are. Does that change the notion that he, George Bush, is living out his duty and making decisions based upon conviction, no it does not. Should we be in Iraq? Yes, we should. I think that God is using George Bush without his even realizing it. I believe that the God that I love and serve is very capable of using the most arrogant of men and women to fulfill His desire and His direction for all of us. Believing that means I am not going to second guess what God is doing; something that I think Dr. Baldwin is doing. As for arrogance, read the Bio of Dr. Baldwin, it smacks of pride (from my point of view) and makes me suggest that perhaps there may be a log in his eye and a splinter in George Bush. One more thought if I may; to the person who said they are a liberal Christian, that sir or maam is an oxymoron and cannot be. You may be a Christian who is ill-informed, unlearned in scripture or plain ignorant to the Word of God, but you cannot espouse being a Christian (little christ) and hold to homosexuality as normal, abortion as okay, or secular convictions. To do so would make you a liberal who thinks they are a Christain.

Whine and complain! Work for justice! That is what God wants! Quit whining and offer solutions that will help people! Believers; don't talk with each other about the problem, find out how to help. Talk about solutions, work for solutions. Speak healing words, not incendiary words!

I agree with Mr. Nofziger on all points but one. He says, "that government is ... but an unavoidable evil." I believe the Scripture teaches that civil government has been instituted by God, and that we are commanded to submit ourselves to those in authority over us. Government at its core is Godly. We call Jesus our King. King is a governmental title. We find government in our homes and in our churches. In our day, the word "government" has been reduced to what goes on in Washington, DC. Government is so much more. Government is God's idea. It is a good and necessary idea. Government by nature is not corrupt. It is sinful men who corrupt government.

Part of the problem is that we allow politicians who say a couple Christian-sounding things to pass themselves off as Christians. We don't test the spiritual character of our leaders, we just believe them when they say they're Christians (even the Mormons, strangely enough ...). It is long since time that the people of God demanded more from our government and those who claim to lead in our name and His Name.

Following Up On That ...

... Since when has God used the strongest Army? Look at Gideon. He had too many people for God to use it, so He started sending them all home. The same happened over and over again through the Old Testament. When God is really leading a battle, it isn't done with the most powerful-looking force in the world. Jericho didn't fall because Joshua invented the Peterbilt and battering ram. It fell to prayer and faith. We have B-1's, B-2's, and more tanks than anyone else in the world. That doesn't sound like the army in God's service.

There are two simple solutions. Both are not easy the way the system is currently manipulated. The first is vote all of them out of office. If they are an incumbent throw them out if they are being arrogent, stupid or going against the will of the people Last election (2006) for a couple races I wrote in "None of the Above is acceptable." And I plan to continue to do that. Maybe if in a couple races "None of the Above." Wins we will start getting a better quality of canidate, but I doubt it. The way it is set up now, the people that could do the job best don't want it. The other solution is impeachment, all politicians can be impeached not just the president, but birds of a feather flock together so that makes that very difficult to do

Being a 26 year veteran and owning enough firepower to take on an entire street gang, I can hardly be called a paciifist. therefore, my current opposition to our foriegn policy is not based on opossition to war. I do detest the government telling "Us civilians" to just sit back, sign over more power and money to them, and they will defend us". In the words of Sci-Fi author Robert H Hienlin, I am not a civilian. I am a citizen. I do not need to cower behind the military industrial complex in fear of being forced to bow twoards Mecca. Even if the enemy were capable of doing so (A conventional occupation is not a threatr we face. Sorry but anybody who knows what it would take knows this is not the threat we face) I have a .45 caliber means of telling any enforcer dressed like Lawrence of Arabia to "Take a hike!" (I also have a .22 caliber, 7.62MM, and 12 GA. means of doing so as well. So I don't need to send kids over there to do what I refused to do by turning down a 27th year of service.

On the subject of freedom. The freedom we cherish is not spoken of well in the Bible. Peter warns of false teachers who "Promise freedom while they themselves are slaves of deparavity. Have we forgotten the story of Exodus? Once free, the Jews longed for "The good old days in Egypt." Then, after Joshua. We enter the period of Judges which the Bible sums up "Everybody did what was right or wrong in thier own eyes". (Modern Democracy?). But even worse, when the people became fed up with the anarchy, they cried out "Send us a King! One who will rule and judge over us like those of the other nations!" (Modern Liberalism?) When people are under order, they cry our for freedom. When they are free, they will sign over their freedom to whomever will promise order and security. And the cycle goes on. When one frees an enslaved people before their time, they will look for a new master.

There is nothing new under the sun. More disturbing than the arrogance of the government is the attitude of the mainstream Churches. Too many Evangelicals signed on to Bush's gospel of bombs & bullets. I even heard one Pastor chastise Bush for "Stopping in Iraq". He went on to proclaim that is was our "Christian duty" to send fourth our christian army and liberate the entire world under the flag of American and Cross of Christ. One Christian radio personality actuall allowed a neo con radio talk show host to come on his radio program and proclaim "God has blessed this nation with the most powerfull military that has ever existed and if we don't use it to libertate the world into democracy, God will judge us!"

Eveb though I am a very liberal Christain, I agree with Mr. Baldwin much of the time. Many Christains have caome to believe that conservative parties, ie. republicans, or officials will somehow do things in the best interest of Christains and morality. Nothing can be further from the truth. ALL politicans first goal is to look after those persons or organizations that support them finacially. Example- I believe that the last thing the republican party would like to see is abortion made illegal. It has been a great money raiser and and vote getter for them. We have had many votes on gay rights, stem cell research, flag burning, but except for late term abortion we have not have one vote on making abortion illegal since the republicans took the White house and all of Congress. Mark my word, the republicans will have a pro-abortion presidental canidate next year, because it is in the end more important to get elected than to stand for issues. The Dems are no better !! The person that can raise the most money is usally the person that gets the nomination. We must start to look at what we want goevnment to do and vote for, and donate to, the person that will support our wishes regardless of if we believe they willor even if they can win. Stand for principals, not parties. Kevin

Thank you, Mr. Baldwin, for giving us the ongoing truth of the American story. From the list of recommendations from Mr. Nofsitz, I like the idea of secession. You have identified well the three branches of our federal government. For years I wondered about "lobbying." I now have no doubts that it was merely a gentler word for "collusion." We shouldn't be surprised about the border agents being prosecuted. After all, that was the federal government's way of dealing with Ruby Ridge, WACO, and many other less actions that received less notoriety. Wether or not as a Christian, one might choose to believe it is not proper to defend oneself with a weapon; it was none the less written into the Bill of Rights of the American Constitution a right to bear arms--and expressly for the purpose of fending off a government gone arrogant. I'm afraid complacency has set in amongst many of my peers. George Cancilla
