I like your idea. Training and being prepared is good. Our enemies do not fear us anymore. Our own people do not fear or respect each other anymore. Bootcamp would help that, too.

Real homeland security begins at home; and not with some federal government agency. The agency that calls itself Homeland Security that was formed from the Patriot Act, is more of a terrorist threat than any individuals acting out terrorist activities. I agree with you coach that we need to arm ourselves against intruders to our person and property. The crime rate was always lower in the rural country areas because criminals knew that most of the farmers had guns and would use them if necessary. We as citizens of the USA need to dismantle the huge federal bureaucracy and quit allowing ourselves to be herded and manipulated by their dictates. George Cancilla

My attitude about carrying firearms is that if a person wants one, it should be provided (the only possible exception might be a person who has had a major criminal history and is out of prison...but even then, it might be better to allow them so that everyone knows that the person is armed instead of that person getting a firearm through the black market and no one knowing until it is too late). My only problem with the Coach's argument is about the airport screening...it would be really, really stupid to bring a firearm on board an airplane for one's regular carry-on (if there was a fight, a bullet in the side of the plane would possibly kill everyone.) I dunno, do you have an idea about the airport screening that would be better?

Being an avid firearms enthusiast,I wholeheartedly agree with you on this. But here are some obsticles to your idea and my ideas for a solution.
First and foremost, it should not be possible to terrorise a Christian. Jesus taught not to fear those who can only destroy the body.
The tactics of the enemy is to bypass our military and Law Enforcement and get directly to our population. In the spirit of our founding principles, we are not supposed to have a soft underbelly for a general population. One caller to a talk show remarked "If Cho had tried to do his shooting in downtown Oakland, he would have shot one person and been shot back at 32 times." Our reaction to terrorism should be "You are welcome to try but I coudn't guarentee your safety." Even those who chose not to bear arms, a pacifist who goes with his or her head high and not begging for mercy has it's place too.
It has been a while since you were in the military if at all. I retired back in 2002 and believe me, it isn't the same military. High school athletics are more physicaly demanding and recruits have rights these days. DI's are not even allowed to raise their voices anymore so it isn't the cure you think it is for our modern hedonistic society.
An armed populace also means a responsible populace. Lets impiment the "Well regulated" part of the 2nd! All who wish to own a firearm should recieve a crash course on the UCMJ. A copy of the UCMJ should be included with every firearm sold. When one commits a crime with a firearm, in addition to civil trial, that person shold also face a court martial conducted by his fellow militiamen. If the person is a member of a gang, militia in defiace to the nation, or anyother organization that is in rebellion, or if the person rejects the authority of the court martial (And thus renounces his rights under the 2nd) That prson should be declared an enemy conbatant. To be confined indefinately or until the organizaion his colors repesent formally surrenders.
We need a clearly defined rules of engagement and clear procedure for a militia to turn over a situation to law enforcement (This would involve training law enforcement as well as militiamen).
In return, all law enforcement officer should have the same authority of an armed citizen as a commissioned officer does over an enlisted. This would eliminate the loopholes the civil courts have allowing thugs to get off on techinicalities.
For minor offenses such as safety violations, impliment Article 15 of the UCMJ. Reckless use or gestures with firearm need to be pusnished with fines, safety drills, and other punishments allowed under Article 15. (Thre days in the brig on bread & water). Gang members and wannabes need to be drilled with dummy rifles until the sight of a gun sickens them.
In order to prevent governemtal abuse, all UCMJ cases, even those cited by law enforcement should be handled by fellow militaiman. Call them up for service in the same manner one is called for jury duty. Start with Reservists, Retiress, honorably discharged veterans. Add any other gun owner who wishes to serve. Appoint Military JAG Officers to each community to train and oversee the proceedings but the Militiamen themselves to all the real work.
In order to make this work, we need to offer firearms discipline as an alternative to liberal gun control. The permissive rights rehtoric of the NRA is not going to cut it. The NRA could't be doing worse if it's actual mission was to play the part of the gun crazed idiots the liberals accuse them of being.

I like this man's ideas. I always thought we should stop terrorism "over there" before it came "over here". After reading Coach Daubenmire's article I realize he's right. Terrorists are already here. And we are slowly having our right to bear arms taken away from us. This is a very subtle infiltration. And yes, if the students and teachers had the right to bear arms they could have at least defended themselves. The Government seems to have "forgotten" this little part in the Constitution. I think I'll remind them. Thank you for this post.
