Re: Public Libraries, The Left, and the Corruption of Children

This afternoon I made a trip to my public library and while there decided to look around and see if they had gay/pornographic materials within easy access as you described. I'm very sorry to say they did. One was called "Gay Nightlife in Las Vegas." And the most disturbing thing was that this material was placed in magazine racks next to the restrooms, at the height of very small children. The magazines were placed so the covers were visible for any child to see and read and, of course, pick up if they wanted to. Romans 1, descriptive of the Apostle Paul's time, and even more so of our day. May God have mercy on us!

I worked at a public library for several years -- I was one of several Christians on staff -- and our library did carry The Advocate and other gay publications. We also carried books by C.S. Lewis, Max Lucado, and other Christians. The Christian books far outnumbered the books that advocated homosexuality. The purpose of a public library is not to indoctrinate anybody; it is to provide information and ideas from all perspectives. It is a PUBLIC library, not a Christian library, and Christians should not expect it to contain only Christian-friendly materials. Part of the beauty of public libraries is that they allow free access to a variety of ideas. As Christians, we should take advantage opportunities to read books written from other perspectives so that we can better understand those we are trying to win for Christ and can better argue against anti-Christian messages. As for children having access to inappropriate materials, I say, "Whose responsibility is it to educate children and to guard their minds? Parents' or libraries'?" When we place such a responsibility on a public library, we abdicate our right as parents to teach our children, and we limit the free exchange of ideas among adults, an exchange that often leads others to Christ.
