Thank you again Ingrid, for expressing your God given wisdom and discernment on Celebrity vs. Humilty. The marketers choose celebrity and the deceived fall for it, hook, line, and sinker.

Couldn't have said it any better! Thank you for your stand and for your obvious wisdom in these last days. Both will become harder and harder to find as that day draws near.

Thanks Ingrid. This is a problem today. My mother went to her church's womens Bible study and they were doing it on a Beth Moore book. She asked me why no one does a exposition of the Bible anymore? She said that Beth talked to much about her own experiences, her feelings and her interrpretation of what Scripture means as if we could not understand it without her.I could only agree with her. It seems that everyone writes books these days. Don't get me wrong , there is a place for some of this, but it has become just a source of income to far to many today. Same goes for music.

Amen, amen and amen. You have stated what I have been thinking, exactly. Aside from good commentaries, map books and lexicons, I eschew the "self-help" stuff. God's Word has the power of edification, correction, exhortation, repentence, salvation, etc. through Jesus Christ. "Purpose-Driven" and other man-centered, here's how to do it books, do not. It's in the obedience, not the doing. God's blessings, and thank you for your column. -RDG

Ingrid: What sound advice. The level of biblical illiteracy among professing Christians is tragic. As a woman's Bible teacher I am saddened by the numbers of ladies who flock to those who will tickle their ears and fail to study God's Word for themselves. No wonder American Christians fall for every form of deception. It's frightening really. I pray for modern day Hilkiah's who will discover again the "Law" (probably hidden away as a prop behind the drama stage somewhere) and this nation will see a true Holy Spirit motivated revival. Thanks for you boldness.

Used chewing gums.

"But it is a spirit in man giving them perception, even the Breath of the Almighty" Job 32:8. The miriads of christian books have become a great distraction, only a few being really worth reading. But also the proliferation of paraphrased scriptures is leading people away from the personal, holy engagement to the Word of God. To read these paraphrased books, which they call bibles, is like picking up an old chewing gum stuck under a pew and starting chewing on it! Why depend on someone else's chewed up work while the new, fresh unadulterated Word is available, and the Breath of the Almighty is ready and willing to give us perception? There is indeed no substitute for personal time with God.

I just sent this article to almost all of my friends in my e-mail address book. I have not had the desire to read "other" books for quite some time. I have found that I have more interest in my Precept study. This is a most timely article in view of all the emerging books out there. Thanks

And that from a child thou hast known the holy bestsellers, which are able to make thee wise unto self through fads which are in Christian retailing. Annual scripture versions are given by inspiration of mammon, and is profitable; forgetting doctrine, forgetting reproof, forgetting correction, forgetting instruction in righteousness: That the man (and woman, and child) of God may be pacified, throughly furnished with goods that don't work. 2 Timothy 3:15-17 (CRSV) Christian Retailing Show Version

Thank you Ingrid for your article. I believe that the Lord Jesus has been putting this subject on my heart also. It is with great frustration that 'Ladies' Bible Studies' are no longer Bible Studies but book studies about someone's interpretation of the Bible. Personally, I have returned to the King James Version of the Bible and have found the word of God to exactly as God says it is "...quick, and powerful amd sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit..."(Heb 4:12). I have noticed, however, that many dear folk prefer to read books than the Bible simply because they DO NOT do that. Having been a former 'bookworm', I believe that our Heavenly Father has impressed upon me to 'fast' books for particular periods of time over the last few years and now they have simply lost their flavor. The Word of God, however, has become more interesting and exciting and continues to become so. I commend this article and would recommend sharing it with friends as I think that ladies in particular are more prone to relying on second hand spiritual ideas and are actually more easily deceived into false thinking and doctrine.
