The reason people stand when hearing the "Hallelujah Chorus" is due to King George II. The first time the King heard this chorus, he was so filled with awe and inspiration, he stood. And, when the King stands, everyone stands. This article is well stated, but I must add one thing. After having sung "Messiah" many many times, I must confess that the second and third parts are the most beautiful. The first part is the Christmas portion. (Actually, the "Hallelujah Chorus" is not in the Christmas portion.) The second and third parts are normally played together. (The "Easter" portion and the "Redemption of Man" portion.) If memory serves, the first thing one hears in the second portion (Easter) is "Behold The Lamb of God." It will bring tears to your eyes. There may be more beautiful music in the world, but I do not know where it may be.

Amen, Amen! Every Christmas at our Home Church Christmas party, we read from Isaiah and listen to Handels Messiah. Our hearts seem to burn within us when we hear Isaiah's words and listen to the Hallelujah Chorus. It is as if we have touched the face of God! Hallelujah, we SHALL behold Him! And He shall reign forever and ever! King of King and Lord of Lords, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and He shall reign forever and ever! Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!" Merry Christmas to you too.
