And what numbers do we use for said dates? Arabic numerals! Every major religion has had an impact on our lives, not least Christianity. - ScienceBoy

The western calendar year is based on what used to be commonly referred to as the Year of Our Lord. Of course from a religious perspective that has no legal standing, but as distasteful as it is to some, our heritage and English Common Law are peppered with Christian doctrine.

In reference to your claim that Jesus Christ wasn't mentioned in this article, this was in the article under the heading "The Capitol Building": All of the eight large paintings in the Rotunda present aspects of our Christian history. Two include: The Baptism of Pocahontas this shows the baptism of one of the first converts in the Virginia colony. The Virginia charter said they came to propagate the Christian Religion to such People, as yet live in Darkness and miserable Ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God. Departure of the Pilgrims from Holland shows the Pilgrims observing a day of prayer and fasting. William Brewster is holding an open Bible upon which is written: The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God With Us is written on the ships sail.
Note the text of the passage? - Christ was definately, thought of by the founders.

I just returned from Washington, DC and was surprised to discover that the Lincoln Memorial is actually a temple to Abraham Lincoln. The incription above his image says:
In this temple
As in the hearts of the people
For whom he saved the Union
The memory of Abraham Lincoln
Is enshrined forever
I came away feeling very uncomfortable about the fact that according to the inscription, this is a "temple" dedicated to a man who "saved" America. I am in no way denigrating the deeds and accomplishments Lincoln, and the other men and women whose images are all over the city, but I wonder as a non-American Christian about whether these historic sites confuse America and the Church. Which one is the people of God? How should Christians from other countries understand God in relation to their homeland, especially when there is conflict or disagreement between America and their country?

Mr. McDowell stated, "There are many other monuments and buildings in Washington that proclaim Americas faith in God." He then said, "This brief tour of our nations Capital reveals that Christianity is the source of Americas liberty and prosperity."
The two statements don't jibe. The first statement is true enough. There are many references to faith in GOD, the Deity, Nature's God, etc. in our monuments. And the same may be found in some of our founding documents. But, there is not a SINGLE reference to Jesus Christ in any of the examples Mr. McDowell gave, nor even a single reference to Jesus Christ in any of our nation's founding documents.
Sorry, but there were and are many Americans who believe in God and His influence on our country, but who don't believe in Jesus Christ in any way.

I'm hoping for your sake as a human being that what you said just there was sarcasm. If it was, I apologise and I enjoyed your humour if you weren't being sarcastic, you are a sick, twisted monster who should be doing their best to find repentance with their Lord if they're religious for saying such childish, heinous and inexcusable things. You'd best get yourself an edjamacation on Amewican Histowy. - ScienceBoy

This article is a real spit in the face for native American people and their incredibly rich cultures (yes, they inhabited the Americas centuries before Europeans and their religous beliefs did). I see the same thing in my homeland Australia when people talk about it being a "young country": the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia have inhabited the contintent for thousands of years. History didn't start when us White people showed up, and to claim it did shows a lack of historical understanding and, quite frankly, racism. - ScienceBoy

Too bad a christian nation will never work. It never has, even with israel, who had God at their backs no matter how many times they turned from Him. If we were ever a christian nation, we lost that when allowed slavery, or racial discrimation, corrupt politics, the suppressing of native americans (ever heard of the manifest destiny???), supporting dictators to fight communism, gaining control over other nations through economics and culture and sometimes by wars to "liberate" them from whatever, etc etc.
