There may be no evidence to support his conversion from Washngton himself but that doesn't mean that he wasn't a Christian. Of course there is no words from Washignton that demonstrates that he professed to be a born again Christian either so we shouldn't claim that he was a Christian. One of my college professors who World Magazine interviewed (just to demonstrate his 'conservative' credentials) takes this position from the lack of evidence. The only real evidence is Washinton's words about the 'merits of Jesus' which was very much accepted by deists and believers alike. Jim

I recently stood next to the pew that Benjamin Franklin sat in for many years in Philadelphia. We know from his writings and those that knew him that although a deist, he was probably not a Christian. The case against Washington is not as strong and I agree that secularists want to paint the founding fathers as faithless to remove the influence of Christianity from American foundations. In Washingtons case, there is nothing to prove that he was not a Christian, so we must rely on those that knew him and Nelly Custis-Lewis letter is very compelling. In this discussion, we should be intellectually honest that even though many founding fathers were Christian, we cannot say that most of them were as fact. We must also admit that many were influenced by deism and the writings of John Locke. My best guess is that as a Christian myself, I will be seeing George Washington and John Adams in Heaven. I cannot say the same for Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson. - Darren

There was nothing in this article to convince me that indeed George Washington was a born again Christian. He may very well have been but this article showed me his works and said nothing about a faith in Jesus Christ alone for his salvation. After reading many articles on Worldview Network about the Pastors preaching easy believism today I would hesitate to call someone a Christian based on the evidence given in this article. That said, it doesn't take away the greatness of the man George Washington or that he left a great example for future President's to follow. Was he a Christian? I don't know.
