The Future Has Arrived!

By David Reagan

I am constantly running across articles by Dispensationalists in which the argument is presented that in order to be a "consistent futurist," you cannot contend that prophecies are being fulfilled today. Instead, it is argued that all end time prophecy relates to Israel in the Tribulation and Millennium. Therefore, all we are seeing today is "stage setting," but not the fulfillment of prophecy.1

I strongly disagree with this viewpoint. First of all, there are four end time prophecies concerning Israel that were fulfilled even before the 20th Century began. They are:

  1. The dispersion of the Jews worldwide - Deuteronomy 28:64.
  2. The worldwide persecution of the Jews - Deuteronomy 28:65-67.
  3. The desolation of the Jewish homeland - Deuteronomy 29:22-28.
  4. The preservation of the Jewish people - Jeremiah 30:7 and Jeremiah 31:36-37.
Some might respond by saying these are not end time prophecies, but they are. The end times or the "last days" began at the Cross. The writer of the Hebrew letter referred to his day and time (the First Century) as the "last days." The Apostle Peter also called the time in which he was living the "last times" (1 Peter 1:5 & 20). And in the same letter he stated that "the end of all things is at hand" (1 Peter 4:7). The "end times" began 2,000 years ago. We are currently in the end of the end times, and we know this because God's Word gives us signs to watch for that will mark the end of the age.

The fulfillment of the prophecies listed above makes it clear that all future prophecies in the Scriptures regarding Israel do not relate to just the Tribulation and the Millennium. Additionally, there are other futuristic prophecies in the Scriptures regarding Israel that were either fulfilled in part or in whole during the 20th Century, and they are prophecies that point to the soon return of Jesus.

Current Fulfillment of Prophecies Related to Israel

Consider, to begin with, the most prolific futuristic prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures - namely, that in the end times the Jewish people will be regathered in unbelief from the four corners of the earth.

This regathering began in the late 19th Century when Theodor Herzl wrote his book, The Jewish State, in which he advocated that the time had come for the Jews to return to their homeland. In 1900 there were only 40,000 Jews in Israel. By the end of World War II this number had risen to 800,000. Today, it stands at nearly 6 million. The Jews continue to come, but there is no doubt this is a prophecy that is being fulfilled before our very eyes.

Or, consider the re-establishment of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948. This was a clear and definite fulfillment of Bible prophecy. It is an accomplished fact, and it is a miracle of God. It is not mere "stage-setting," it is a play that has already been performed in full.

Another accomplished fact is the revival of the Hebrew language from the dead. When the Jews were scattered from their homeland in the First and Second Centuries, they stopped speaking Hebrew. The Jews in Europe mixed Hebrew with German and created a new language called Yiddish. The Jews in the Mediterranean Basin mixed Hebrew with Spanish and created a language called Ladino. But the Bible prophesied that the Hebrew language would be revived in the end times (Zephaniah 3:9), and that is exactly what happened in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries through the efforts of one man - Eliezer Ben Yehuda. Today, the people of Israel speak biblical Hebrew.

Equally certifiable is the reclamation of the Jewish homeland. As pointed out earlier, the Bible prophesied that it would become a desolation after the Jewish people were expelled from it. But the Bible also prophesied that when the Jews returned to the land, it would once again become a land of milk and honey:
"The desolate land will be cultivated instead of being a desolation in the sight of everyone who passed by. And they will say, 'This desolate land has become like the garden of Eden; and the waste, desolate, and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.'" (Ezekiel 36:34-35)
When the Jews started returning to their homeland in the late 19th Century, it was a total wasteland. Nearly all the trees had been cut down and the soil was badly eroded. The land resembled a desert. Most of the valleys had become malaria-infested swamp lands. The Jewish pioneers began planting trees, reclaiming the soil, and draining the swamps. Today, Israel is the bread basket of the Middle East.

Another prophecy that has definitely been fulfilled in our times is the resurgence of the Israeli military. Zechariah 12:6 says that in the end times, God "will make the clans of Judah like a firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right hand and on the left all the surrounding peoples..."

The fulfillment of this prophecy can be seen today in the incredible military power of Israel. It is one of the world's smallest nations, yet it is ranked by all experts as one of the four top military powers in the world.

Finally, with regard to Israel before the Tribulation begins, the Bible prophesies that Jerusalem will be re-occupied by the Jews (Zechariah 12:2-3 & 6) and that it will become the focal point of world politics (Zechariah 12:3). The Jews returned to the city when it was captured in the Six Day War in 1967, and today, all the nations of the world are coming against Israel over the issue of who will control Jerusalem in the future.

Current Fulfillment of Non-Jewish Prophecies

But end time prophecies regarding Israel are not the only ones we see being fulfilled in whole or in part before our very eyes. Daniel prophesied that in the end times the old Roman Empire would be revived (Daniel 2:31-45), and we can see that being accomplished today in the creation and expansion of the European Union.

The Bible prophesies repeatedly that in the end times there will be a great apostasy in the Church (1 Timothy 4:1, 2 Timothy 3:1 & 5, 2 Timothy 4:3-4). We are up to our ears in that apostasy today as major Christian denominations ordain homosexuals, approve same-sex marriage, deny the deity of Jesus, and mock the inerrancy of the Scriptures.

In like manner, the Bible prophesies that "in the last days" society will disintegrate into a cesspool of immorality and violence (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Can there be any doubt that those days have arrived?

Daniel was told that the end time prophecies would not be completely understood until the end time - that is, until the time comes for their fulfillment (Daniel 12:8-9). That time must be upon us for we are living in the time when ancient prophecies are being understood for the first time ever, due to historical developments and technological advances.

Taking the Signs of the Times Seriously

I could go on and on, but I think I have made my point. The future has arrived! End time prophecies are being fulfilled today. What we are witnessing is much more than "stage-setting." God is clearly fulfilling promises He made thousands of years ago to the Jewish people. And God is orchestrating the fulfillment of end time prophecies that are not related to the Jewish people.

It is exciting to see these prophecies fulfilled, and I am tired of seeing people attempt to depreciate their importance by flipping them off in a cavalier way as nothing more than mere "stage-setting."

Jesus is coming soon. The signs of the times attest to that fact. God expects us to take those signs seriously because He is about to pour out His wrath upon this world in the Great Tribulation, and He does not desire that any should perish. The fulfillment of prophecy all around us today is God's way of waking us up to the fact that we are living on borrowed time, and we need to use the remaining time to commit ourselves to holiness and evangelism.

Free will vs God's will
Posted On: 11/17/09 11:51:54 AM Age 46, WI
Scripture seems quite clear on the issue of "who chooses who" when it comes to salvation. If man can "choose" to follow God, then it stands to reason that man can "choose" to not follow Him at a later date. If God desires "all men to be saved" yet most are not, then is not your God unable to do His will? But if properly read that God desires all kinds or types of men to be saved (in context as written), it takes the whim and fancy of man based decisions out of the realm of God's will, and places it rightly back into God's hands.

why the attack

It is interesting that Worldview weekend publish a commentary that is a personal attack on those who happen to employ, through all of Scripture (not just prophecy), a hermeneutic that stays true to a consisent, literal, historic, and grammatical approach of interpretation. How disappointing to read an artical with an ideolgy that is out to destroy a solid hermenutical approach to Scripture. When theology drives hermenutical principles, the result is a world view that is- well- like the one that is prevalent today. Those who would consider themselves dispensationalist are not the enemy. Let's keep our eye on the ball; stay true to the Scriptures and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ- the future of unsaved people need to hear that more than see the saved argue and attack each other.

Ya Gotta Be Blind

Anyone who thinks we ARE NOT living in the end of this age has to be totally ignorant OR is still in love with this world. Aids is at an all time high, while man allegedly knows so much more about it. H1N1 running rampant. Global starvation at an all time high. Wars and rumors of war abound. Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Turkey,Lebanon...etc. etc. etc. ALL at odds with each other!!!! Oh, I forgot Israel, pardon me.People are still flocking BACK.Israel is even offering free housing to people who return!!! CHINA has the 200,000,000 man army, already. Crime across this globe is atrocious. Corruption in governments is rampant, including the good old USA. The Vatican is endorsing Obama and a one world currency. The money has already been printed. We already have a one world economy thanks to the internet.I can shop anywhere in the world I like. It's now time for the weather forecast. NEVER has the weather been so messed up as it is now. Record floods, fires, droughts, hurricanes and earthquakes. Today's religious establishments are NOT any kind of "church" that I want to be a part of. The Muslim/Islamic terrorists are actually gaining ground in the world while The Cross is being pushed aside. The Bible Is The Divine Word Of God and it's not going to be circumvented by ANY MAN.All men are born sinners and Christ died for our sins. BUT without repentance and a TRUE LOVE OF CHRIST which should create the inner desire to repent and have faith in Christ YOU ARE A LOST SOUL. God gives man the free will to make the choice. Eternal life or eternal death, it's that simple. As I type this the Eastern United States are getting inundated in floods. Not just another NORMAL DAY in the life. When God knows that there is not one Gentile left on this planet who will accept Christ as their savior, then the times of the Gentiles will be done. God wishes that no man shall perish. It's our choice......YES, this is the last age of man. God's Kingdom, ruled by Christ Jesus comes to this Earth and it cannot happen soon enough. 'Tis the season. Always be awake so as to not be caught off guard when Christ returns. In The Blink Of An Eye !!! Peace and Love, In Christ Jesus' Name, Timothy Joel

A Dispensationalist in agreement

Quite honestly, if you accept the verbal plenary interpretation of the Scriptures, I find it difficult to believe that all such are not dispensationalists. Having said that, I fully agree with you that we are in the End Times. I find it exciting, because that means the time of His Coming is soon. God bless. Keep up the great articles.

Signs of the End Times

You mentioned specific scriptures that we are witnessing right now. I agree with you completely. What is meant by stage setting is that we are not in the tribulation or the 70th week of Daniel. Before the Tribulation starts the rapture of the church must take place first. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 states that the man of sin can not be revealed until the Holy Spirit is taken out. I believe we are at the verge of the start of the Tribulation like the 11th hour and 59th minute. From my 45+ years of study two events happen the exact same day that starts the Tribulation. 1. According to Daniel 9:27 the Antichrist signs a 7 year agreement with Israel which is the 70th week of Daniel or 2,520 Days. That event reveals who the Antichrist is. 2. On that same day the Two Witnesses appear and prophecy for the first 1,260 Days according to Revelation 11. The church is in heaven during the Tribulation. Besides 2 Thessalonians 2:9 from Pentecost through the end of the Church Age which ends at the rapture. The Churches mission was to make Disciples according to Matthew 28:19-20. During the Tribulation the Two Witnesses and the 144,000 Jewish witnesses take over that task. Half way through the Tribulation the Two Witnesses are murdered by the Antichrist and after he performs the abomination desolation by sitting in the Holy of Holies. Many Jews flee to Petra where God protects the for the last 1,260 days according to Revelation 12. Jesus Christ returns with the church from heaven according to Zechariah 14 and Revelation 19 & 20. Jesus then sets up his Millennium Kingdom on this earth.

Dispensation Misrepresented
Posted On: 11/10/09 04:19:59 PM Age 70, TX
Article is a good read but....you do disservice to dispensationist when you misstate that they do not believe prophesies are being fulfilled today and all of them are for the future. Example - they all recognize that Israel being put back in the land in 1948 was a fulfillment of prophesy. You may not agree with dispensations (can't understand why not when it is so clear in Scripture) but please don't put words in their mouths that they do not believe to make your point.

Check the Context
Posted On: 11/10/09 02:15:43 PM Age 60, WI
The phrases “The end times” and “The last days” do not always refer to the same period of time. In some instances they refer to the church age; in other passages they refer to the period of time just prior to the Second Coming of Christ at the end of the Tribulation. The way to tell is the difference is by looking at the context. Failing to observe these distinctions can result in faulty interpretation. Dr. Reagan argues that since the church is in the last days and various Old Testament prophecies are to be fulfilled in the last times, those prophecies are being fulfilled in our day. That analysis is not correct.

Prophecy, apostasy etc.

Thanks Dr. Reagan for this article. Indeed, we have witnessed and are witnessing monumental events. I do not agree, though, with the pre-tribulation rapture. Many years ago I came to the conclusion that the pre-wrath view is correct. It eliminates so much theological tap dancing; it provides and un-strained way for fitting the pieces together. One more point, if I may. Concerning the falling away, the issues you mention---denial of Christ's deity, virgin birth, innerancy---are the obvious ones. Less obvious, it seems is the huge tsunami of Contemplative Spirituality/New Spirituality/New Age practices and beliefs invading virtually all denominations. Some of the top names in evangelicalism have been taken by this panentheistic trojan horse. Very few will speak up about it. God bless you, Dr. Reagan.

rapture?
Posted On: 11/10/09 12:16:34 PM Age 43, TX
Does the Bible say Jesus comes 3 times or 2&1/2 times? Why is it called the Second Coming? When He said "coming on clouds" - that is old testament language for a sovereign God judging people. It is not actual cloud surfing by our Lord Jesus. You can't take everything literally. Why would Jesus say "this" generation or "soon" if he meant "that" generation 2000 years in the future which isn't "soon" at all? How cofusing. Is Jesus just really bad a grammar? no! How cruel to flaunt the idea that waaaay later, other believers will be saved in the 21st century, but not you, sorry guys! Deal with it. Why are we so special? why does he explain in Matthew 24 that 2 will be standing and one taken? is this the rapture? no! the word "taken" means taken to judgement - the saved are not taken to judgement. How about Matthew 13:28 where it is explained that the tares (unbelievers) must remain with the wheat (believers) until the end so as not to pull both up together. He just said DON'T take up either one early - leave them till the time of the harvest to be burned, THEN gather the wheat to my barn. That doesn't sound like the so called Rapture plan, but I ask why do we need a rapture? Everyone suffers and Jesus saves us from eternal death, not scary end times people - sounds like the rapture is just for big babies trying to get out of a bad situation - almost arrogance - that we are more deserving than past believers. Darby, a priest that walked away from the church, was anti-semitic was the instigator of the rapture theory and the apostles and authors of the Bible did not openly talk of the future believers who would be getting a free ticket out - was that really good news for comforting them? It has been taught incorrectly for the last century or more and I know many won't let the idea go. I understand, I used to believe it myself. But now my eyes are opened and the truth has set me free. Jesus is still coming, but only one more time - for good, to finish His Kingdom!

Regarding the post above, I agree with your statement about not knowing the day or the hour....however, we can know the season. God gave us his "calendar" through the Feasts/Appointments of the Lord (Lev. 23).
