Evangelism Highjacked by Closet Theological Liberals

EVANGELICALISM: HIJACKED BY CLOSET LIBERALS

My colleague, Mike Horton, has just published a book, Christless Christianity. I write, so to speak, from the belly of this beast, attending the National Pastors' Conference, sponsored by Zondervan and Intervarsity Press, which is taking place in San Diego, February 9-14, 2009. It is amazing to see how these once faithful publishers of evangelical orthodoxy are now consistently and deliberately launching a massive but subtle attack against the "Fundamentals" for which Evangelicalism stood courageously against liberalism in the past.

While I am struck by the sincerity of the brilliant public speakers (named below), who still have evangelical piety and passion, their openly-stated theology is turning large swathes of the evangelical church into various new forms of old-fashioned though very cool liberalism.

1. UNDERMINING OF SCRIPTURE: Brian McLaren is still widely featured here. He believes that the age of sola scriptura is over. Rob Bell, a plenary speakers, believes the Bible is a "human product...not the product of divine fiat" Little wonder his former colleague at Mars Hill, Ron Golden, now Senior Vice President of World Relief, a ministry of the National Association of Evangelicals, in a seminar I attended, openly boasted, "Karl Barth is my theological mentor." Barth undermined the classical orthodox doctrine of Scripture. Is it surprising that in all the plenaries except one, there was no biblical exposition?

2. THE ABSENCE OF CHRIST: Christ's atoning death was passed over in silence. A few examples:

--In the middle of a "worship service," Andy Crouch of IVP interviewed A.J. Jacobs, an editor at Esquire magazine, about his book, The Year of Living Biblically. Jacobs, a non-practicing Jew, lived for one year according to OT laws, letting his beard grow, wearing Kosher clothes and practicing Sabbath and the Ten Commandments. Crouch did not remind him that the New Testament was part of the Bible, nor that Jesus saw himself as the very center and goal of the Old Testament (Luke 24:27). Jacobs concluded, to applause, that he had become a "reverential agnostic."

--Christ is absent but "Jesus" is here, as the architect of a socio-economic revolution that he began while on earth that we must finish, with the help of all religionists and globalist socialists of good faith. Shane Claibourne (30), who looked like a youthful throw-back from the Sixties, with tee shirt, very baggy slacks and very long hair constantly exhorted people to get serious about non-materialistic living. His model was Mother Theresa with whom he worked in India, but never once did he make any attempt to include the Gospel of saving grace as the motivation for Christian service. McLaren summed it up: "Jesus teaches a way of life rather than a set of beliefs."

Every video clip from World Vision and other ministries was exclusively about digging wells in Africa. Not a word was uttered about preaching the Gospel to Africans bound in pagan practices or Moslem darkness. We are losing our nerve and closing our mouths! Sooner or later, we will endorse all "valid" spiritualities, as do McLaren and Bell.

A GLOBALIST FUTURE

The other half of the very center of the Gospel-Jesus's physical resurrection-was also absent. A miraculous divine transformation of the physical universe really does not fit this new liberal social gospel of the kingdom, which comes incrementally through our works of social justice. Certainly, eschatology is not a   Left Behind "board game figuring out where we are," but when asked about the Early Church's expectation of the imminent final coming of Christ, McLaren rejected Christ's final coming out of hand, Ron Golden said it was an image of being open to the kingdom coming now, and New Testament scholar Scott McKnight spoke of New Testament eschatology as "metaphorical rhetoric." This is pure liberalism gone wild, at an evangelical pastors' conference!

DE-PERSONALIZATION OF GOD

With all the emphasis on the earthly Jesus, on our human efforts to bring in the kingdom, and on "Human Flourishing," God as personal savior is vague, even absent. God was referred to in a large plenary session as "God revealing 'godself,'" thus successfully avoiding any gender-specific language for God but successfully depersonalizing Him. The absence is filled by seeking God's "presence" through mysticism and so-called "spiritual disciplines," so widespread in impersonal pagan spirituality.

Both the bold-faced audacity but more, the naiveté of this project is quite stunning. There is no mention anywhere of the vastly superior pagan project, already well-developed, to construct a this-worldly socio-economic utopia, very similar to neo-evangelical's this-worldly "kingdom of God." Will this "shovel-ready eschatology" of human justice be digging the church's own grave? Will the two meet one day, and then, as Jesus asked (Luke 18:8), "Will the Son of Man, when he comes, find faith on the earth?"

Thank you, Dr. Jones

Thank you Dr. Jones for having the courage and the tenacity to expose this apostasy. There are so many Christian leaders who don't have the guts to call a spade a spade; then stand up for the truth and warn the flock with the heart of a shepherd. I am continually amazed at the cowardice and unfaithfulness shown by so many Christian teachers and pastors. It would be more intellectually and morally honest for them to discard their Christian faith and adopt whatever pagan system of beliefs tickles their ears the most effectively. At least then they wouldn't bear the responsibility of deceiving so many and taking them down the wide path that leads to destruction.

Friend: You don't make sense. Your subjective reasoning sounds all loving of the plight of others, but you fail to see the consequences of your love. Where do the cells for stem cell research come from? Has the research produced anything of value, I mean other than an additional revenue source for abortion providers? Gentle death? I hear a carefully placed bullet is painless; but why should we sanction it, so that there is no mess to clean up? You seem to be compassionate toward the ten year old's painful birthing but fail to consider the painful abortion of the unborn, the rape the 10 year old endured, the eternal consequences for murder, or the protection of the rapist the abortion provides. Talk about human cruelty, are you really 84 years old? John

The road is narrow, Jesus came with a sword to divide, and in the last days even the members of our household will be our enemies, and everyone who says they are of Israel are not of Israel was spoken by the Holy Spirit as truth and prophesy, and now it is coming to pass. The truth of who we hold as supreme in our hearts will be manifest as these pagan idolatries enter are presented as an offering to God. We, as believers cannot drink the cup of demons, and the cup of the Lord. If we haven't chosen yet, we will have to. If we choose to follow Him and His truths, we will have to come out from among them or we will share in it's plagues.

No Catholics?

The inability of the Christians to come together on even their most basic of "beliefs" speaks volumes about the veracity of the whole thing. It is obvious that your gods are only figments which differ wildly from person to person. What is so sad is the fact that despite the "diversity" of opinion, so many of you have the unmitigated gall and insufferable arrogance to think you have it all down just right and have the right to tell the rest of us that we can't perform stem cell research, provide a gentle death for those suffering excruciating terminal pain, to require even a ten year old rape victim to endure a painful and dangerous pregnancy and birthing, and on and on. Your blind "faith" that you're going to heaven despite you cruelty to your fellow man is simply appalling.

JESUS IS ABLE TO SAVE

Dear Kim, If you just keep trusting Jesus to save you He will surely do it. We must keep looking for truth at our best effort, but no person can keep themselves. Jesus is able and willing to keep you in His hand. I prayed for you tonight. Lou Newton

I'am Nothing without Christ

Dear Mr. Jones, Evangelism hasn't been highjacked. This is just another sign of the times. The Church as we once knew it no longer exists. These men have been seduced. Satan has brought his plan into play perfectly. While men slept the enemy crept in and sowed his seeds. All we are seeing is the Church reaping what the enemy has sown. And why is it so Mr. Jones? The Church has no discernment what so ever. Why? Because we don't pray. I mean really pray. The prayer meeting is the cinderella of the Church. Paul wrote that we would not endure sound doctrine, having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof. Just a sign of the times. The devil has everyone running around trying new programs, lousy music, ineffective preaching. I haven't heard anyone preach on hell in the last 10 years. When was the last time you heard someone preach on the blood of Jesus. As Paul said "who hath bewitched us Mr. Jones? God Bless

There is so much out there that is "strange" one must be ever alert and constantly pray for wisdom & discernment. As a Christian of 20+ years and not having been brought up without any Biblical knowledge it is SCARY. I pray daily the Lord keep me on His path, and hit my upside the head good and hard, if I stray from is teachings. Please pray for me. Thanks

Peter: It's about love man!! What's Jesus got to do with it? I hear Pastors all the time talking about the love of Jesus, and then explain it as servitude. They never once talk about the cross or the blood!!!!!! (It angers me when I think about it) Truly, the love of Jesus is the cross and love is never defined properly without the context of Jesus, is holiness and sinless life. John

Sadly this is the way the times are going. The true follower of Christ will eagerly seek discernment regarding the times in which we live. The true Chrisian will be pushed to come out and be separate as stated in scripture - how can it be otherwise? Oil does not mix with water and I believe with all my heart that one day in the near future we Christians will be at a crossroad - times are dictating the push forward - either to cling to Christ or fall by the wayside in the sea of deception. Jesus did not promise freedom from persecution. He, til now, has blessed this country with an amazing abundance; but how many of us truly know and believe we are held accountable to Him for those blessings?

JESUS IS EVERYTHING

Peter, thanks for the article; very good job. It is sad indeed the state of the church in our nation and the rest of the world. The person who possesses Christ possesses everything there is to possess and lacks not one thing. The person without Jesus Christ has nothing. Jesus gives us His Holy Spirit when we gives our lives to Him and leave Him set on the throne of our life. We are not saved by following the law, even the law "that we should help the poor".
