Veteran Christian Broadcaster Takes On "Compromising" Pro-Family Leaders

Pro-Life Leaders: Principle or Politics?

By Dick Bott Sr.

To:
 Those Who Also Wonder

 From:  Dick Bott, Sr.

Subject:  Abortion & Marriage /  How Important Are They?

These are my honest and heartfelt reflections.  And that's all they are.

From the beginning, I've listened and watched and thought hard about who is the right candidate for pro-life leaders, who say the issues of Abortion & Marriage are the two absolutes beyond any other consideration.  Those two issues and those alone, are the only issues that are "deal-breakers."  It was agreed that finding the 'best' candidate on those two issues is why the meetings were convened.

Along with several others, I sat in meetings where the merits of various candidates were discussed back and forth.  Every consideration was put on the examining table for discussion among those who gathered for that expressed purpose.  And I never heard anyone in those meetings say the issues of Abortion & Marriage were simply two of many other issues of equal weight.

As important as taxes, national defense, the economy and even immigration were during these discussions among that group of leaders, no one ever expressed that Abortion & Marriage were no longer the only two issues that would dictate our final consensus as to who was therefore most worthy of our collective support.

There were one or two who were already so settled on giving their support to Mike Huckabee, because of his unbroken pro-life credibility, they didn't care to even discuss any of the others.  But for the most part, everyone else showed great interest in considering all others in an honest attempt to determine who was the RIGHT candidate -- not necessarily who was the most likely to WIN!

But as time passed, it became clear to the vast majority that Mike Huckabee was the one candidate our group could support with complete confidence.

It was then, however, the group was encouraged, by a few 'leaders' to postpone any collective decision until a special Values Voters Summit could be held in Washington where grass-roots values voters citizens could actually hear for themselves each of the Republican candidates and then cast their votes for who they thought was the clear choice.  Even though postponing a consensus-vote would delay the action of the group of assembled leaders, it was finally agreed that no collective action should be determined until after the Values Voters Summit was held.

And the rest is history.  Determining the consensus of the group from then on was derailed.  The thought seemed to be that no determination was better than having to acknowledge that Mike Huckabee was the candidate of choice.  Any candidate other than Mitt Romney would not be permitted to surface.

When the Values Voters Summit was held, after hearing all of the candidates speak for themselves, the values voter grass-roots attendees voted five to one for Mike Huckabee.  Huckabee gathered more votes than all other candidates combined, including Mitt Romney.  Even when the ballots of those who voted on-line before the Summit were included in the final tally, Mitt Romney was just a point or two ahead of Huckabee.  It was never made clear why the on-line voting was mixed-in as part of that tally, because including the on-line votes distorted the meaning of the outcome.  The outcome of those at the Summit, who voted "after" actually hearing the candidates speak, was not credited with the true meaning it deserved.

And then it became very clear to me, and to many others, that Mitt Romney was being pushed along into a presumed front-line position beyond any understanding as to why that was happening.  Mike Huckabee was the ONLY candidate whose past record on Abortion & Marriage was totally consistent and unbroken -- and therefore totally trustworthy, and therefore totally supportable by those pro-life leaders who had publicly said those two issues were the primary and paramount issues for them to weigh.

Now whether or not Mike Huckabee could actually win was not my major concern.  This is not a horse-race where handicapping a winner is part of the process.  My concern has always been WHO is the most pro-life and pro-marriage candidate to support and most trustworthy on those "Two issues."

In looking at his "past record" and listening to his own voice on TV when he was running for the U.S. Senate and for Mass. Governor, Mitt Romney forcefully, even heatedly, proclaimed his support for Abortion and for Gay Rights.  That factual record alone should have made Mitt Romney clearly unacceptable.  And any consideration of his recent so-called pro-life "conversion" should have been explained.  And it never was.  His so-called "conversion" was directly tied and timed to his White House aspirations.  The guy is "Slick" -- and he's got lots of money.  But is that the criteria for being a genuine trustworthy pro-life President?  Come-on!

Now it seems clear, at least to me, that if Mike Huckabee would have had the pro-life leaders' support he deserved and that he had earned from the start, he would be way out front right now.  Even without it, he's doing amazingly well.  If poor old tired and grumpy Fred Thompson would have bowed-out before the South Carolina vote, Huckabee would have won that state handily.  And he would have not only beaten John McCain, he would have blocked the McCain surge that has been growing ever since.  Add it up.  Look at the results.  Thompson stayed in the race in South Carolina to play the part of a spoiler.  And the pro-life movement is paying the price.  Shame!

And if the pro-life leaders' VOICE would have been clear and "clean" from the day it was obvious who was the one candidate whose past pro-life & marriage record was most believable and trustworthy from the start, who knows where the pro-life cause would be right now.

But I fear, for lack of leadership on those TWO issues, John McCain will be the Republican nominee -- clearing the way for Obama & Clinton to win the White House.  But perhaps that's the way it always is -- when "first things are not kept as first things" by those whose voices are trusted and followed.

How much money did Mitt Romney spread around?   How much influence and/or silence did his money buy?  How much justification can be made for the positions of some?  I don't know.   But I do know that at some time in the future, history will tell us the full story.  And whatever it is, it will be interesting.  But will it be helpful to the future?  Will pro-life movement leaders have learned a lesson from it?  I doubt it.  Somehow history is always repeated.

But one thing I do know for sure is that I've known Don Wildmon for more than thirty years and his only motivation has always been to do what was RIGHT regardless of whether it seemed to be winnable or not.  He's never, ever, seemed to care about finding ways to WIN at the sacrifice of PRINCIPLE!  He's content to stay in the background maintaining a constant effort to do what's right regardless of what others do.  Good for him.

And after graciously listening to each candidate, and after carefully considering the past and present record of each -- Don Wildmon staunchly endorsed Mike Huckabee!

How about Alan Keys, what has become of him? He is pro-life.

To 43 in AR...fantastic response. I'm so heart-broken with most of my professing Christian churchmembers/family/friends who continue to ignore this fact. Apparently, those in leadership in the "pro-life movement" are so emotionally tied and dead-set on a federal amendment (both on life and marriage), that they can't hear the wisdom that Rep. Paul speaks on the subject. They have ears but cannot hear. The "pro-life" leadership has been used by the Republican party and cannot accept the harsh reality that stares back. The Sanctity of Life legislation sponsored by Rep. Paul in both 2005 and 2007 with the Republicans in control of all levels of the Federal Government resulted in 3 and 4 co-sponsors, respectively! How illuminating is this fact? The Sanctity of Life legislation proposes two things: 1.) defines life as starting at conception, and 2.) invokes Article 3 Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution to remove the jurisdiction of the U.S. Supreme Court on matters of life - thus IMMEDIATELY negating Roe v. Wade. This would expose all the Republican politicians who have manipulated "pro-life" Christians to gain political power...now look who's in office: a professing "Christian" who declares there are multiple paths to God - wow, is this man deceptive. Lastly, how long will professing Christians fall for the "conservative" Supreme Court judge antics? The Republican party has been responsible for either 6 or 7 (out of 9) of the Supreme Court justices at all times in this country for the past 30+ years...yet somehow the Republicans have convinced "conservative Christians" that the Democrats are the "liberals"! Oh, but that Christians would have eyes that can see. From 2000 to 2006, Republicans were in control of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the Federal Government - as well as the majority of the Governorships at the State government level - yet look at the accelerated slide our nation has been on the past 8 years!! Because the American "church" has committed spiritual harlotry with the Republican party it is on the verge of reaping what it has sown. The beast of the Federal Government is about to turn on it. Friends, wake up...the time is very late indeed.

Pro-Life Is Very Important, But Consider the Rest Too

It may be true that Mike Huckabee has always been pro-life, but you should not overlook that McCain and Romney both support the overturning of Roe vs. Wade and are against partial birth abortion, at the current time. The fact they haven't always held this position is no more proof they have adopted this platform for political ends and will drop it if elected, than to say a person can't legitimately repent and follow a different course because they haven't always been that way. I am not endorsing McCain or Romney, but Mike Huckabee is anything but conservative. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself. A good place to start is http://huckabeeexposed.com/. He has been referred to as the "Christian Bill Clinton." He has duped many conservative Christians into supporting him by saying all the right things. I believe he would be a terrible choice for president. His record demonstrates he is a tax and spend, big-government sort of politician. Not every body who claims to be a "Christian" deserves our support. It is this same type of "naive trust without investigating the facts" type of behavior that led evangelicals (including me) to support George Bush for 2 terms because he was a "compassionate, conservative Christian man." At best, he has proven himself to be a nominal or professing Christian who is not all that conservative. People, do your homework before you believe something!

Are Republicans Really Pro-Life?

109th Congress of the United States of America was: --in session from January 3, 2005 - January 3, 2007. --President of the United States - George Bush (Republican) --President of the Senate - Dick Cheney (Republican) --President Pro Tempore of the Senate - Ted Stevens (Republican) --Speaker of the House - Dennis Hastert (Republican) --House Majority belonged to the Republicans --Senate Majority belonged to the Republicans --White House belonged to the Republicans During this 109th Congress, on February 10, 2005, Rep. Ron Paul introduced HR 776. H.R.776: Title: To provide that human life shall be deemed to exist from conception This bill was originally introduced on Feb 10, 2005 with a Republican Majority in the House, Senate, and Presidency, yet never made it out of sub-committee. I'm not saying that as President Ron Paul could get this legislation through Congress either, but he would certainly make it known to the American Public exactly what each party member was truly supporting. The "Republican" ideas on "Right to Life" are a good political platform for getting votes, but when it comes down to it, Republicans are not interested in tackling this political "hot potato". George Bush was our great Conservative President that was the choice of the Pro-Life movement, yet with a majority Congress, he couldn't push this legislation through, because he didn't want to. I'm afraid all other Republican candidates (with the exception of Ron Paul) will go the same path as Bush.

I too am listening, reading and wondering about ALL these candidates who are attempting to "correct" the ills of our country, if only we will vote them into office. However, as a member of a HIGHER Country, and one who is watching for the King to return for me, I am reminded of what He told His disciples in Matt.28," Lo I AM with you ALWAY, even unto the END of the world." And while I am prayerfully considering who it is that should get my support, I think we who are TRULY striving to follow Jesus with ALL of our hearts, must remember, this is NOT our home, we are only passing through this barren, broken, sinful land. And we are to be His "lights", shining forth in the dark places of this world where He has placed us, knowing that we will NEVER be at home here, regardless of who is leading in Washington DC. WE are strangers and pilgrims in this land en-route to a better country, our Heavenly dwelling place where TRUTH and justice will be real and genuine. Maybe this politically challenging hour, will be the time when His true "church", begins to wholly follow Him by way of repentance, and confession of of need of Him in ALL of our ways. And begin to look to Him who ghas promised to supply ALL of our needs. I seek such a moving in my own heart, and am striving to do what He asks us to do when He said; "Occupy til I come." The heart of the king is STILL in the hands of the Lord. Seeking Him, Pastor M.L. Hobbs

litmus test

If we're talking exclusively about pro-life and not other qualifications for president, then Ron Paul wins hands down. He is the only proven pro-life candidate that walks his talk. He doesn't just give lip service that is so previlent with politicians. He is alsoo the ONLY candidate that attended the pro-life rally in DC last month. I am not endorsing Paul, just stating fact that if your litmus test for presidential material is pro-life exclusively, then you have no choice other than Ron Paul. John

I respectfully disagree

I'm sorry but I have to respectfully disagree with you. In all fairness, Huckabee has turned out to be somewhat divisive by comments he has made. You mention that Thompson was a "spoiler" of the S Carolina race -- well, that's what Huckabee is currently doing. He is staying in despite the fact that he is trailing behind Mitt, and thus "spoiling" Mitt's chances. I'm not trying to defend or justify Romney's record either. I am an evangelical and wonder why you didn't even mention Ron Paul. A doctor himself, he has always been pro-life and pro-family. Granted, his foreign policy is, in my opinion, totally unacceptable, but if you are looking at the sole issues of abortion and gay marriage, then why not mention Ron Paul?

This article is bittersweet to me because I too feel that Governor Huckabee is the right choice to be our next President.

McCain will beat Hillary but lose to Obama
Posted On: 02/05/08 12:13:01 PM Age 37, AZ
In the article the author states that McCain will lose to the Hillary or Obama. However, I think he'll beat Hillary - Americans don't usually elect people they don't like. However, unless Americans get past the rock star status and pay attention to the policies of Obama, if he's the nominee he will win. It would be great if Huckabee had more experience so Americans could truly consider him as a serious option for President. If we didn't have such serious nat'l security & war issues, his lack of experience might not be such a problem. I DO think conservatives shouldn't be quite so scared of and/or angry with McCain. I've watched him as my senator. He's not all the way to the right on the political spectrum but he IS to the right and he calls it like he sees it. I want to find out what kind of judges he'll nominate.

Who to vote for

On the article above dealing with pro-life and family issues, to my understanding Ron Paul also should be included. I also read in an article, I think on here, that Mike Huckabee is a social conservative. Could you explain what that means.
