Universal Child Care Means Ending Parents' Rights

by Phyllis Schlafly, January 16, 2008

When Hillary Clinton showed television viewers the Christmas presents she wants to give us if she is elected, her most important was Universal Pre-K, following closely after Universal Health Care. Hillary was reminding us of her status as the grand dame of the ideology expressed in her favorite African slogan, "It takes a village to raise a child."

Indeed, there seem to be many busybodies who believe the village, i.e., government functionaries, should make major decisions about the upbringing of children, including what they are taught and how they are medicated. They may approach this incrementally, but their goal is always "universal."

We thought it was outrageous when the Ninth Circuit proclaimed in the Palmdale case in 2005 that the fundamental right of parents over the upbringing of their children "does not extend beyond the threshold of the school door." Now the Hillary-style liberals are also acting as though parents' rights over their own children do not extend beyond the threshold of the local health clinic.

Massachusetts has just started to require that all children in Medicaid (460,000 kids) must be subjected annually to mental health screening in order to detect signs of possible mental illness, autism, or depression. One of the criteria on the questionnaire used to identify mental health problems is that the child is "seeming to have less fun."

It's not hard to predict that many children will be unfairly saddled with a false label, assigned to unnecessary and expensive treatment, and prescribed costly drugs whose effect may range from worthless to harmful. These costs to the taxpayers will be expanded by the inevitable fattening of the pocketbooks of psychiatrists and psychologists.

Last year, there was considerable parental opposition to bills that were introduced into several state legislatures to require mental health screening of all children in public schools. Apparently Plan B is for the state to force the plan on Medicaid recipients, who are less likely to resist.

New Jersey just added four new vaccines to those already required of children who attend public schools, and has become the first state to require the flu vaccine. Children attending preschool or licensed daycare centers must receive the flu shot annually.

New Jersey regulations also require the pneumococcal vaccine for preschoolers, the meningitis vaccine for sixth graders, and a booster shot for the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis they already receive. Despite the protests of many parents, including the New Jersey Alliance for Informed Choice in Vaccination, these regulations will go into effect in September 2008.

Parents believe that this New Jersey requirement is a major encroachment on parents' rights to make medical and other decisions for their own children. Parents also cite the potential dangers of vaccines for some children.

Many of the flu shots and some of the meningitis vaccines contain the mercury-based preservative thimerosal. This is the first time that any state has mandated a vaccine containing mercury since the federal government adopted the policy in 1999 of encouraging vaccines to be mercury-free "as soon as possible."

The Food and Drug Administration advises pregnant women to avoid eating even small amounts of fish with high mercury content. But New Jersey is now demanding that six-month-old babies be given potential mercury vaccines if they spend even one day a week in daycare.

Another toxic substance, formaldehyde, is also present in the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis and flu vaccines.

New Jersey allows exemptions from vaccines for medical or religious reasons, but some parents claim that the process of claiming an exemption is made as difficult as possible.

In Prince George's County, Maryland, officials used the heavy hand of government to force vaccinations. Claiming that 2,300 out of 131,000 public school students had not received their hepatitis B and chickenpox vaccines, the state began what the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons called a "heavy-handed vaccine roundup."

State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey intimidated parents with what he called "legal action." He arranged to have letters sent to all parents who were "out of compliance" demanding that they must attend a court hearing where they would receive a verbal reprimand and their children would be vaccinated, presumably forcibly.

The letter directly threatened parents: "Unexcused absences by your child may subject you to a criminal charge." Few parents knew they could apply for medical or religious exemptions, and many believed they faced jail or heavy fines of $50 a day.

A decent respect for parents' rights over medical treatment imposed on their own children should require that states allow vaccine exemptions for philosophical and conscientious reasons, in addition to medical and religious reasons. A few states do but, unfortunately, not New Jersey or Maryland.

HEAVY

Rome was the largest city on the face of the earth in it's height. Rome needed a lot of water to drink and bath. They used lead pipes for this purpose. There are many who think that this was the main reason for the fall of Rome. The people had to have lead poisoning from the lead pipes. When you read the history it seems that the leaders became more and more irrational. This is one symptom of heavy metal poisoning. When we think we can put a little poison here and there and a little will not hurt we are fools. We put a little in our water, we spray a little on our crops, we preserve our food with a little, and soon the little is a lot. The thing about heavy metals is that our body can not get rid of them. So a very small amount over a long period of time is very bad. My parents had my teeth filled with mercury when I was a boy. I feel this has given me much trouble over the years. A common symptom of heavy metal poisoning is to act insane. This nation acts insane. People actually defend the injecting of poison into their own children and even worse mine. Lou

CHILDREN ARE AGIFT FROM GOD TO PARENTS NOT GOVERNMENTS

1ST I do not believe everything that i read. Are you trying to convince me that breast feeding is bad. What the average baby gets is not what my children got. Of course the people who are dumb enough to believe the government are going to get a lot of mercury in all the food sprayed with pesticides etc. We do not eat these foods. 2ND - Whatever the truth is; the decision to give my child a injection is up to me and not any communist government. I wonder

On my own behalf, I've been wondering how many children in American have been or are suffering from misdiagnosed heavy-metal poisoning?

Did you catch that?

Did you catch that quote? "An infant who is exclusively breast-fed will ingest more than twice the quantity of mercury that was ever contained in vaccines and fifteen times the quantity of mercury contained in the influenza vaccine." You said, "Mercury is one of the most poisonous substances on this earth and I do not want any injected into my child." Then, by your own admission, we should not even breastfeed our children. I read a report just yesterday on webmd that says autism is STILL on the rise even though nearly most mercury has been removed from vaccines. Yes, it would be wonderful to be able to have an answer and be able to avoid autism. We NEED to keep looking...not throwing darts at the wrong place. When we ignore data, we become as dissillusioned as the evolutionists. What if it is proven that there is a genetic link to autism?

MERCURY IS POSION IN ANY FORM

I can remember when Autism and depression were almost unheard of. But these things have come from somewhere and do have a cause. Some would have us believe a little poison is OK for your child. Mercury is one of the most poisonous substances on this earth and I do not want any injected into my child. What is INSANE is for people to act a certain way and get a bad result and then to conclude that to do even more of this thing then will get a better result. To keep on injecting our children with these vaccines that have mercury or other poison in them is INSANE. Lou

Universal Health Care

The people of the United States need to make up their minds about having personal freedom and the responsibility that goes with it, or having social welfare programs which infringe on their personal liberties. Government entitlement programs are a redistribution of wealth by the government and therefore not conducive to a free market society. U.S. governing bodies have a history of creating problems which they then profer solutions to fix. This scam always results in more government and a burden on the general population. Health care has become unaffordable because government has allowed BIG PHARMA to collude with BIG INSURANCE to monopolize the health care industry. The U.S. Constitution makes no provision for government to make decisions in the personal affairs of its citizens. Anti trust regulation would be much more effective than welfare. George Cancilla

Understanding Mercury
Posted On: 01/17/08 03:15:13 PM Age 31, MN
While I understand and share your concern about the topic as a whole, I got off track when reading the particular part about vaccinations. I know there is a great concern and also misunderstanding about mercury present in vaccines. The form of mercury in vaccines is called Thimerosal and is actually ethylmercury. A different form of mercury, called methylmercury is found in the food chain and thus makes its way to humans (ie: fish). Studies suggest that ethylmercury is actually broken down and excreted much more easily than methylmercury, thus it is not accumulated in the body in levels that can cause harm. There is no evidence that small levels of methylmercury found in water, formula, and breastmilk can cause harm. According to chop.edu, "An infant who is exclusively breast-fed will ingest more than twice the quantity of mercury that was ever contained in vaccines and fifteen times the quantity of mercury contained in the influenza vaccine." Understanding the chemistry of mercury and how our body processes it is essential when using it as a basis for considering not to get a particular vaccine.
