FEMINIZATION OF THE EVANGELICAL MAN: MEN MORE INTERESTED IN NICE THAN TRUTH

Feminization of the Evangelical Man: Men More Interested in Nice Than Truth

"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
Let all that you do be done in love."
-1 Corinthians 16:13-14

There is a feminization going on in evangelicalism today that has recently spilled over to the blogosphere.  It has manifested itself by saying things like,
"All you truth-detectors and discernment watch-dogs are just so nasty all the time... Can't we all just get along? Just be nice; make nice; play nice; and OOZE nice? I don't think it is loving to criticize others. You're all just a bunch of big 'ol meanies.  You think you know it all.  If you say anything negative, I'm just going to ignore you. Tissue please... it's just too much to bear..."
These toy-soldiers carry what I call "a velvet covered sword."  It's lightweight, easy to wield, isn't designed for battle, takes little strength to lift it, looks inviting, and won't cut too deep for fear of offending too greatly.  It's like reading the ESV or NASB; and then one day you pickup up a copy of The Message thinking that it too is a Bible; when all that it is, is just a velvet covered sword.

Speak the Truth in Love
To "speak the truth in love" beloved does not mean to be non-confrontational, passive, soft, or simply 'nice'.  No question, Christ-like love is the godly compassion behind speaking the truth in an uncompromised and unadulterated way.

As Paul said in warning of false teachers to Timothy and the church at Ephesus,
"the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."  -1 Timothy 1:5

"Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified." -Acts 20:26-32
It is out of this unmerited, undeserved, self-sacrificial, unfailing agape love that comes the courage and the boldness to contend for the faith, to instruct in sound doctrine and refute those who contradict, to preach the Word in season and out of season, to guard the trust, and to defend the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is precisely because of this love for the Lord and for the truth, men of God have and will unwaveringly say,
"I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."  -Acts 20:24
Ephesians 4:15 in context is that standing for the truth of Scripture as central to ministry within the local church guards against people being tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning and by craftiness in deceitful schemes; and against the savage wolves that propagate such error.
The result:
"we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love."
And that is a most loving thing to do.

It's always fascinating to me that those who fancy themselves the most kind, the most gracious, the most sensitive, and the most endearing are usually the same ones who are most critical against those who champion the faith, yet seldom champion it themselves. Once again, we do need to speak the truth in love beloved –  but speak the truth we must.  We need to always ask the Lord prayerfully, that He gives us the grace-filled balance of courage and compassion; the prophet's piercing voice and the prophet's burning tears; the boldness of a Lion and the benevolence of a Lamb.

But in our day, postmodern evangelicalism would have us place tone above truth, demeanor above doctrine, feelings before faith, and embrace the comfort of the retreat rather than the campaign of the battlefield.

Where Are All the Men of God Today?
  • Where are the men of God that are willing to contend for the once for all delivered to the saints faith?
  • Where are the men of God who are willing to instruct in sound doctrine and refute those who contradict?
  • Where are the men of God who won't tolerate a scatological mouth in the pulpit and will guard the integrity of the sacred desk?
  • Where are the men of God who will preach not themselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord?
  • Where are the men of God who are biblically discerning, armed with the sword of the Spirit, and in the power of the Spirit will abandon themselves to nothing save Christ and Him crucified?
  • Where are the men of God who will say no to the world and yes to Christ - leaving behind career, fame, and the promise of fortune for the sake of the gospel?
  • Where are the men of God today who consider it more a joy to bear the reproaches and insults of men for the glory of Christ, then seek after the praise of men for the glory of themselves?
  • Where are the men of God who love God more than they fear man?
Where are these kind of men of God today?

Martin Luther said it best:
"I would rather preach the truth with too great a severity,
than to ever once act the hypocrite and conceal the truth!"

May the Lord give us men like that once again; men who will leave behind the velvet covered sword of today's evangelical, postmodern world and take up without shame, the sword of the Spirit wielding its truths with love, courage and biblical resolve.

"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." -2 Timothy 4:1-5

REAL SWORDS ? ? ?
Posted On: 01/24/08 05:26:05 PM Age 64, OH
What you say is plain silly. Steve DID NOT say we should pick up real swords and slay each other. If you would read with more care then you would see more truth. By the way the word is NOT what the Bible actually says. The Bible tells us that The Word is The Lord Jesus Christ. That is why we read the Bible; for His Holy Spirit to actually speak to us. Lou

Quotes

An interesting quote from Plato. "The head is to rule the belly through the chest. That is, reason must rule sentiment through a passion for the truth". CS Lewis simply said: "Modern culture has produced men without chests". So true. John

men and women are NOT gender neutral
Posted On: 01/24/08 04:27:09 PM Age 47, MO
Hello: I think you mis characterized Steve's letter. Since he was telling men to be manly, why would you assume that for a woman to be feminine is a sin? I could understand your remarks if he was telling woman to go against their nature and be masculine. Yes, Jesus' salvation is for men and women equally and both are to contend for the faith, but both don't contend in equal ways. Therefore, you err when you wrote: "Let's lead like Jesus did and hold each other up in high regard and treat men and women both as spiritual equals in the work of contending for the faith." If your statement is true as gender neutral then Paul would not have said for the woman to cover her hair, remain silent, not to teach, and to be saved through child bearing. We each have roles to play and they require gender specific attributes. John

physiological testimony
Posted On: 01/24/08 09:47:29 AM Age 47, MO
Outstanding! Pure physiology attests to the fact that men are straight line, women are circular. Those traits are also apparent in the way we see the world and reason. Masculinity is decisive, cunning, and giving. Femininity is protective, nurturing, and harboring. To use another physiological example; men give it and leave it, women recieve it and protect it. You don't believe it, have an arguement with your wife and she will remember it 10 years later! Friends; It's not a disparaging remark to point out differences, as Pepe Le'pue, says; "Viva la Difference." However, the differences have largely been errased in the culture due to societal pressures, laws, and ease of life. That will change and men will once again be men and women will be women, when living becomes a struggle. John

Real Bloodshed ???

I might have given your statements some consideration, but sir, you lost all credibility by accusing Mr Camp of calling for use of actual warfare and bloodshed. That is what YOU literally said. That is not at all what I understood Mr Camp to say. Your post seems to underscore his point. It seems that YOU can't handle the truth.

Christ is the Truth
Posted On: 01/24/08 09:27:27 AM Age 47, MO
Friend: You almost got it right. However, True Truth is Christ only. It is not scripture or church tradition, niceties, the sacraments, wine or juice, Maryology, which day is the Lords day, etc. If churches would just preach Christ only there would be a lot less division. John

MEN AND WOMEN
Posted On: 01/21/08 07:14:10 PM Age 64, OH
I think you need to read the article with more care. Steve did not say what you said he said. Steve said that men who were not willing to CONFRONT the error in the church were feminine. He did NOT say it was feminine to be in error. If Steve had addressed a large portion of the women in this nation as cowards, some would argue that he would have had reason. It seems to me that many women are being cowardly when they say they want to compete on a equal basis with men but are the first to complain when men bully them. Like the woman golfer who wanted to play with the men; but when a man tried to join the woman tour it was not allowed. If women wanted to compete on an equal basis with men in sports it would not be a thing of beauty and would not glorify God. God created men and women different. If they put women and men basketball together there would be mighty few women and probably none who could make the pro teams. The women have a right to compete separately; but so do the men. Women either want to be treated as the weaker vessel or NOT. They can not have it both ways. Some want to call men names and even swear at them, but if the man would strike the woman like the man she is acting like, she would be the 1st to call him a woman abuser. Was she not being a man abuser when she yelled and screamed at the man. I think women are a lovely creation of God when they act like women. Ruth is one of my HEROES. But I see few like Ruth. When a women tries to act like a man she makes a mighty poor man as does a man when he tries to be a woman. Lou

Called to do what?
Posted On: 01/20/08 03:41:52 PM Age 56, CA
quote - It is out of this unmerited, undeserved, self-sacrificial, unfailing agape love that comes the courage and the boldness to contend for the faith, to instruct in sound doctrine and refute those who contradict ... unquote - What faith? What doctrine? Roman Catholic? Reformed? Orthodox? Lutheran? Baptist? Evangelical? Pentecostal? All of these gatherings-of-believers contradict each other, often in major ways. Mr. Camp's proposal would have each of us pick up real swords with which to slay all those who contradict. This is nothing less than a call to go back to real religious warfare with real bloodshed. Is that a useful model to aspire to? - On the other hand, aren't we (male and female) actually called to simply teach the "Word" (what the Bible actually says), rather than teach "truth" as Mr. Camp suggests, and leave it to the Holy Spirit to reveal to the hearer what that Word means (the "truth" part)? We are not called to convict or save anyone. We are called only to teach the Word to those who have not heard it. God reserves to Himself the ability to convict and to save. What part do swords, velvet or otherwise, play in any of this?

Try it this way
Posted On: 01/20/08 02:15:07 PM Age 28, TX
Ever notice that when a male starts behaving cowardly, he is exhorted to "man up"? I would give further examples of how a male is described when he lacks the psychological qualities of manhood, but most of them refer to his lacking physical manhood...Or how about "mama's boy"? Ever hear that one? There's nothing wrong with calling a fellow "feminized" who refuses to behave like a man. Most males who try to act like a woman invariably demonstrate the negative versions of our positive traits.--Mrs. Pilgrim

Wonderful!!

What a marvelous response!! I especially like the fact that your response displays and models precisely the virtues at issue: contending for the truth, but doing so with gentleness and respect. You've shown that you can be assertive, bold, and strong without thereby compromising respectfulness or humility. Thank you for your service to the faith over these many years; and thank you also for your service to the readers of this article - you identified exactly the problems that unfortunately overwhelm and obscure its merits. Your response is a wonderful example of matching one's words and deeds; it shows in two different ways (by argument and by example) why this whole "feminization" complaint is totally wrong-headed.
