How many copies of the Bible do you have in your home?  Today, some people not only have book copies of the Bible, but also copies on tablets and other ‘smart’ devices.  As such, we often take the Bible for granted.

As we take the Bible for granted, others around the world long to be able to have a copy available to them.  In fact, throughout history, many people have paid with their lives so that we can have our English Bible.

Joining Jim to discuss this issue was Dr. David Brown.  Dr. Brown is the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Oak Creek, has a Masters in Theology and PhD in History and specializes in the history of the English Bible.  He’s also the president of the King James Bible Research Council, President of Logos Communication Consortium which operates LogosResourcePages.org, and is on the Board of Directors of the Center for Research and Preservation of the Majority Texts.

Even today we have groups encouraging people not to read the Bible.  Who or what is behind this? Dr. Brown believes this effort is as old as Eden.  He told listeners, ‘Satan hasn’t changed his tactics. He questioned the Bible, he subtracted from the Bible, he added to the Bible and we know from 2 Corinthians 4 and verse 4 ‘…In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them that believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.’

So while we know we have a redeeming Savior, we also have a book about that Savior that many were willing to die to defend.

During this history-filled edition of Crosstalk, you’ll learn about the following concerning our English Bible:

–The Church of Rome and how they wanted to keep the Bible away from the people.

–Who put together the first English Bible?

–Thomas Bilney during the English Reformation.

–7 arrested/burned in 1519 for translating the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments from Latin into English.

–John Rogers and the New England Primer.
