WHAT DOES A PRESIDENT DO WHEN HE
NEEDS A RIDE TO CHURCH?

Recently, I came across a small but interesting piece of information at the law library concerning the Father of our Country. Apparently, the President needed a ride to church one Sunday morning. It appears the President's harness for his carriage was damaged. Consequently, he could not use it that day. What does a President do when he needs a ride to Church? You hitch a ride with the Chief Justice of the United States!
Sometime in December 1789, President Washington sent a short note to John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The note was probably written by the President's aide, David Humphreys. The President explained his problem to Mr. Jay and asked him for a ride to Church in his carriage. Since George Washington had just appointed John Jay to be the first Chief Justice of the United States, it is highly likely that Mr. Jay did everything possible to help the President out. Both men lived in New York City, the nation's capital at the time. Later in his life, Chief Justice John Jay would become the President of the American Bible Society. Here is the Note the President sent to John Jay:

"TO JOHN JAY

                                                                                                                         Sunday morning

The President of the United States presents his Compliments to Mr. Jay, and informs him that the Harness of the President's Carriage was so much injured in coming from Jersey that he will not be able to use it today. If Mr. Jay should propose going to Church this Morning the President would be obliged to him for a Seat in his Carriage."   Note 1.
